I'd be more concerned that an auto parts store wants drug tests and criminal background checks.

Seems reasonable to me. Who wants a law-breaking, drug user working for them?

Why, there is easily a few million dollars worth of parts in a given store. I unloaded what was easily $10,000 worth of batteries yesterday. Then think of the thousands of parts kept in stock for hundreds of vehicles and what they cost, and think that we often keep multiples on hand. I don't think there's anything wrong with a huge corporation not wanting to hire criminals. Also, to be driver certified with their insurance, you can't have had any wrecks or tickets in the last 4 years. There is relatively low turnover rate at that company (at my store at least) and I think it's because of how it's run and the management. I was the last hire there, and it was well over a year ago, and several employees have been there 4-5, even 7 years. I'm sure they could just hire whoever applies like at McDonalds, Wendy's, etc, and the turnover rate would be so high that no one would know how to use the computer system (took me about 3 months to learn it). Often times employees are well experienced in working on cars as well. One of my mangers has been doing automotive mechanical work for 30 years, starting in his garage when he was 14, then the military, then for AAP. People like that don't just apply every day, so when you get them, it's important to keep them on.

Why not be your own boss?

If you don't really NEED to work, and only want something to add to your discretionary income, then that screams for "hobby turned business", to me. Everyone has some skill and/or interest that they can make a small amount of money at if they are willing to give it a shot.

Actually, I envy your position, A1.

If they already sent you for a drug test, they are most likely in a position to hire you. Drug testing costs $$$ and if that manager was just BSing you and not planning to hire, he wouldn't have given you the test. He is probably just trying to scare you to the point of you saying "I'll cancel my vacation just so I can work for you." Make sure he has your schedule request in writing and go for it.

On a side note: I used to do hiring for Wal-Mart, and we had cases similar to yours all the time. We were instructed to "show the door" to anyone without open availability. However, if I could tell I found a potential employee whose refs checked out and would benefit the company, I went around that rule and worked with their schedule.

A publicly traded corporation has rules it must follow to to satisfy the stockholders and government regulators. Drug test and background checks are part of the routine they HAVE to do. My company was purcahsed by a major corp and we now have alot more rules and regs.

The biggest difference between part time and full time, besides the hours, is they seldom give benefits to part-timers. More and more employers are trying to hire part-time workers to save on the escalating health care costs. (Walmart is notorious for it). The problem with that is working multiple part-timer's schedules. It can be a real nightmare for a supervisor.

TJR said exactly what I was going to say--consider self employment.

He said that I would be needed on weekends as well. I figured ok, no problem.

I realize there's likely a whole lot more to that conversation than what we're seeing here, but this statement sounds to me like he informed you up front that this position involves significant weekend time commitment. Yes, you told him initially M-F after 2, but I think he realized that for many job applicants, such statements are "preferences", not "requirements", so when he asked about your weekend availability, he was seeing if you were able to adjust those to meet the requirements that he was needing to fill. When you told him that you could, I suspect he took it to be more of a commitment on your part than you intended it to be.

Should I be able to tell him when I am available to work, or do I need to accommodate his schedule into my life??

You should be able to tell him when you are available to work--but then he should be able to tell you if he has a need during those hours, or if your restrictions cause him to be unable to hire you. If the two of you can't meet somewhere in the middle, then it's best for both to part ways.

Most employers use part-time employees to fill in for the full-time employees, especially on weekends or when they go on vacation.

Must places consider anything less than 37 hours per week as part-time, however it does not mean that you will never need to put in more hours...Often more than 40 hours is not uncommon.

Employers will usually require specific times that a part-time person must work, simply because it is to fill in for a full-time person, or part-time simply means to be flexible in your schedule where you may work 42 hours or more one week and the next week you may only work 22 hours?

Most employers don't allw you to pick and choose which hours you want to work, and fewer still will shuffle the schedule for a new-hire to attend a wedding on a week-end when they were scheduled to work.

You probably need to pass on this job since it sounds like you and the boss have already started out on the wrong foot. It sounds like he is anxious to get the position filled immediately, and you feel like you the job is a bit of an inconvenience to your schedule.

I doubt that the guy will wait or want to give you off for the wedding, so you may want to wait till after the wedding to look for a job.

I have taken off a week for a trip to Las Vegas that my wife and I planned for our Anniversay many months in advance. But it was six months from when I was hired till I took the trip. I actually went in early and stayed late almost every day and had accumulated enough extra time to take off...But many employers will not do that.

I went in this morning and took him the employee handbook that he gave me back, along with the blank for that he gave me to take to the lab for my pee test. I told him that after discussing it with my wife further, we decided it best for me to stay at home so that we can do what we want when we want and not have to worry about schedules and such. He got kind of irate. I apologized for wasting his time. He told me it really put him in a bind because he has a guy leaving the week that was scheduled for thsi weekend, and that he just sent two new hires to another store based on him hiring me... Then he was mad that I cost him money because he had sent out for a crimnial background check. I then explained to him that I was again sorry and that is why I didn't go and do the urine test.. I then bought some stuff that I needed, he gave me my usual discount that he always gave me whenever I shopped there, and I was on my way..

It was all for the best, as I was contacted by a company that I did some side jobs for a couple years back to work for them. It is a local software company (small - 10 employees) I will be doing some graphics design and interacting with some clients that I had acquired back before I parted with the company. All of it will be out of my home, and they are coming it to set me up with new junk in my office and are even talking of putting in a T3 line for me here, as I have the space availble for the 8-node Render farm that they are buying for rendering the 3D images that are required by our clients. We do a lot of musuem kiosks (touch screen interactive exhibits) I will also be assembling the hardware (computers that the clients need to run the software) This is all good for me. I wold not have been able to do this job unless I met some of the people I did in the military... I couldn't just walk in off the street and apply for one like that, as I have NO fromal training in that envrionment, but this company knows what I can do.... So I will be working out of my office here at home... Making a bit more then the $8.25-8.50 and hr for Advance... More than makes up for the 20% discount I would have gotten on parts :D

As I said earlier, you will need to take hours worth of tests and be trained. There's no way he could seriously have you ready to be working an actual shift this weekend. I didn't work a shift without assistance til my 3rd or 4th week there. Just too many procedures to learn, know where the parts are, etc, etc. He sounds like kind of a DA.
