The back think is why I'm looking at recumbents now. The recumbent exercise bike I've tried is much easier on my back than the regular bike. One the road might be a different issue, but I'll see.

I ride a recumbent understeer bike. It's a little wild to get used to but I haven't fallen...yet. We do 13 miles 3-4 nights a week. If you have balance issues, the trike version might be for you. I don't like to ride on the street too much but we have very scenic bike paths around Dayton OH area. I feel a trike will be in my future 3-4 years from now. It is better on your back & arms. I'd recomend the regular steering over the understeer.

Sounds like a lot of people have a few different bikes in their garage.

I still have my BMX and its still in good condition - its also a Schwinn. I'm pretty happy with the quality of their products, otherwise I would have bought a different brand Mtn bike. I think I will be upgrading most of the parts on the entry level bike I bought this year. New Forks/suspension, disc brakes, and who knows what else. The Kenda tires/rims combo that came with the factory set-up are pretty sweet too.

I already had to upgrade my handlebars and mount. The ones that came with the bike became very loose while I was on a trail. When I got home I took a look at it and found that the threads for one of the screws on the handlebar mount was stripped. Just goes to show those entry level bikes have some of the cheapest/crappiest components :(

Shaun don't upgrade your Schwinn. Save up instead and buy a whole new bike. You will be much happier. Ride the Schwinn till you break it then replace with the likes of a Specialized, Transition, Norco, Rocky Mountain, Kona, Trek, or Giant. Stay away from department store brands. Mongoose, Schwinn, Etc... Even though they offer a decent product their qc and build quality are still sub-par.

Here's another bike I have.....don't ride it too much anymore. It's much faster than my recumbent but a hell of a lot noisier:
