I am planning on getting sirius sattelite in my trac shortly and was wondering how and where you ran your cable for the antenna as well as where you mounted it. Pics would be nice.

centered it on front roof. ran wire along seal and through firewall where vacum line enter firewall on pass side. you might be able to see pics in my library

I ran mine out the third tail light. You can then just tuck it under the plastic trim all the way down the A-piller and then under the dash. Very easy.

My XM antenna is out the CHMSL. Ran the wire out the bottom of the light then looped it around the outside of it (still hidden under the edges of the light) and it is centered above the light on the roof. I ran the wire out the bottom to help prevent water from running down into the third light/cabin. On the '07's Ford left a small notch in the center of the top of the light to accomidate the passage of a wire. Not sure if that was the reason, but the XM antenna wire fit right in that gap. MPTony has a good idea as well if you don't mind it up front.

On my '01 I had run it out the third light as well with my GPS antenna. I did have to cut away a bit of thee trim around the top of the light to keep it from pinching the wire. I then sealed it up good with clear silicone. Did not have a leak.

Mounted mine on the center console and drilled holes through so I was able to hide all the wires and also get power from inside the 12v outlet. This way you don't have to have the cigarette lighter adapter showing. Then I ran the wired under the seat, under the door sill trim, up and behind the seat and out through the 3rd brake light.

First, let me say, I don't have XM or Sirius. However, I have read all the various threads on running the antenna and I am wondering...

As a variant of running the wire through the seal of the third brake light has anyone considered running the wire THROUGH the brake light cover? It seems to me that a "just big enough" hole in the middle of the top of the red clear plastic and another one through the back of the brake light assembly, near the top, might be ONE way to go. Of course, you could still seal and all. If you can visualize this the wire would almost "elbow" through the cover. Would that be any more watertight?

Or is it just a bad idea because if it leaks it takes out your brake light?

TJR, that sounds like a good idea but you would have to make too large hole in the brake light--at least for Sirius. The Sirius antenna has a large plug on the end where it plugs into the receiver and the other end has the anenna attached. We run it through the brake light because then we only have to cut out a notch for the wire. XM may be different but I don't know.

Big D-no leaks here.

XM and Sirius use pretty much the same connectors. You can remove the plastic off the connector, but that still leaves about 1/8" hole that would need to be drilled. Like George said, it is easier to cut a notch (the notch is about the size of the tip of a ballpoint pen) and then run the wire an seal it with silicone. The earlier Sat radio antennas were dual coax wires and about the size of a power wire on a lamp that you would plug into the wall in your house. The new ones are very flexible and very thin.

Ran mine from the front, as shown in a picture by someone else, down the window channel to the door. I then took the door seal away from the door frame and slipped the wire under it. I glued the seal back in place, went down the inside post trim to the dash and then you can go where you want from there. If you put it in the windshield you can tuck it into the space on the dash in front of the windshield to the area you want to come out of. Hardly see it at all. :p

Thanks George, and yes, with that big a hole it wouldn't be worth drilling the brake light cover and housing....just slit the and silicon the crap out of it later.

Click on my Green wrench or the link below for my XM Radio project. It describes how I put my antenna in. Two years now with no leaks through the third brake light. I didn't notch the cover, I just cranked the screws down and it sealed without silicone. I go through the high pressure washes too, so I almost expected it to leak.

Tom, it's just a reflection. My truck was only a couple of months old when that photo was taken. There's still no rust or scratches almost two years later. :D
