The translation isn't perfect, but I thought the video was cool.

Are you really moving to Poland, from OKC? I'm sure there is a thread where you talk all about it but I missed it. It always amazes me when someone makes a move like that. It was quite a stretch for me to move from Auburn, Al. to Atlanta, Ga. The thought of being half way around the world from my family (parents, brothers, friends, Auburn football) would scare the hell out of me. Good luck!

WarEagle,

It's just part of being in the military. Since Nov 1995, I have spent 27 months in Turkey, 27 months in Portugal and 12 months in Korea. This will be a 2 or 3 year stay in Poland. It's exciting and scary at the same time. :)

I would think the great thing about it is you really get to see what life is like in places like that. It's not just seeing it as a tourist.

Ahhhh, for some reason I was thinking you were a Ford employee and was part of the "reductions". Again, good luck and THANKS for your service.

Chet,

It is a good way to see how other folks live. At this location I will be no where near any US military base, so I will live like the natives. I'm told very few residents speak English, so I will need to learn Polish quickly. Fortunately, I took four semesters of Russian back in college, and Polish is very similar. :)

Interesting and cool, Nelson!

I am always amazed how easy it is to make assumptions when one lives in "flyover country" and doesn't get out enough. This world is a big ol' place, and there are plenty of opportunities and things to see.

What are you going to be doing there on your job (besides fighting the war in Bellyouch!)?

Gavin,

My job will be to build a web-based advanced distance learning system for NATO troops worldwide. I'll be in charge of designing, installing and maintaining the server and terminals at distant end classrooms.

Nelson,

Good luck, and God Bless, for you and your family, during the move, and throughout your

service!!!

Hope all goes well for you and yours!

This Polish assignment will possibly be my last one overseas. I'll be retirement eligible when I finish it, and I'm not sure how many more moves I want to make. Poland will be my ninth assignment in 19 years. I'll take at least one more to come back home.

I followed my dad when he was in the Navy too, so I have never set down roots. I started to do that here in OKC by buying a home, but the Air Force had different plans for me. I do like seeing new places though, and I am still thinking about joining the State Department as a Foreign Service Officer after my military retirement. :)

Gavin,

I can honestly say it hasn't been boring, and it has rewards. Not too much money, but I have friends EVERYWHERE. It is weird too, that I run into people I know in very unexpected places. The biggest surprise was running into one of my buddies from Portugal at a rest area in Texas. :)

Another funny thing is that one of the guys in my Fantasy baseball league is currently a weather forecaster in Thule, Greenland. At the beginning of the season he was at McMurdo Bay, Antarctica. His nickname in the league is Frozen Balls.
