I have a whining that kicks in at about 20 mph and gets progressively higher in pitch as speed increases until wind noise drowns it out. It does not drop in pitch as the trans switches gears. It's not loud enough that it takes over all the sounds inside the cab but I just don't remember this sound being there. I have checked the trans and read diff fluids and the levels are fine. The front bearings were done a few years ago.

What else could it be?

Should have said this in the initial post.

Sound seems to be coming from the rear.

If it were tied to the alternator wouldn't the sound pitch up and down with the RPM's?

Rear axle seal. Dealer ripped his hair out on my '07 trying to fix it. Finally found a TSB and got it quieted down most of the time.

My '10 Limited has the same squeal at times, but is not nearly as loud as the '07 was. It hasn't compelled me to take it in to be checked. The radio is pretty good at covering it up.
