I don't know how to describe this noise, but I just noticed it. I recently installed Rancho RSX shocks on my '04 Trac. While installing the rear shocks, I dropped down a plastic box which seems to be attached to the gas tank emissions system (i.e. vapor recovery?). My check engine light came on a couple days ago. Tonight I crawled under the truck and found a hose had fallen off the plastic box by the gas tank. Before reattaching it (needed to drop the spare), I noticed that when I turned on the key to start the engine, just before it started there was a loud sound like a double drum tap, as if something was happening in a hollow area. I start the engine, shut it off, and the same sound happens again as it is shutting off. If I turn the key again to start it, the same sound comes back. It is really loud and very strange. Definitely in something hollow.

Thanks.

Could be the cats, You may have only noticed it because you were looking for other noises...

I had something similar, it sounded like some one kicked the floor board on the passenger side, It was the cats..

I get that same noise at shut down, since day one. I think it is some vaccum cotrol shuting down.
