Went car shopping today for the missus. We considered the CRV, RAV4, Escape, and Sportage.

After considering all the options, we ended up buying a '06 Escape XLT, V6, 4x2, auto, trailer towing package, moonroof. The 3.0L in the Escape simply had more power and was smoother under acceleration than the other 3.

Plus, Ford employee pricing and $500 rebate was hard to pass up, considering the other 3 had no discounts whatsoever. The Kia dealer wouldn't even come off sticker on the Sportage!

The dealer we purchased it from is only 2 miles from our house, so that makes it real convenient should we need to get it in for service.

Congrats! I had a 92 escape and loved it. Got good milage and was very dependable. Room was the reason why we traded it in on our 04 Trac.

I know, just giving him a hard time. Looks great. Love the color. Now you just need to find out how to mod it without her knowing.

That's some pretty good mileage numbers Gary. I just have the V6, so 20-24mpg is about all I expect to get on mostly highway commutes.

Kia dealers in my area are selling two cars for the price of one. Buy a Sedona Mini-van and get a Rio for free. Also, they are offering a "employee price" plan, but I wonder where they get the price from.

You will love the Escape. You will end up dumping that Matrix before long.

Darin, don't forget it is a Hybrid. My wife says that having a MPG graph while you are driving makes you change your driving habits. No more jack rabbit starts, etc. I think it's going to pay for itself a little sooner than we thought.

Nelson - we didn't go for a hybrid; we chose the standard V6. The hybrid option was a little out of our price range... I needed something in the $22K range.

We have an '01 Escape V6 XLT, since 7/01. No major problems despite being the first year. We enjoy it.....

The Hybrid package is well out of the price range for most about everyone.

Then, to top it off, it will take too long to recoup the investment to save a little gas.

Most everyone I know with Escapes really like them, and the complaints I hear are minor. Main gripe I hear is the small fuel tank. 300 mile range is more than I can go without a pitstop anyways :)

Now, to start with the mods lol

I installed Motorola mobile radios in a couple of brand new Escapes here in Iraq, and I (of course) put some complimentary miles on them for lunch breaks and such. Very nice vehicles. They drive great, and are really manuverable. I had to get a little used to the console shifter though. If I had more room on my center console, I'd probably install one in my ST. (console shifter, that is)

Darin, I had the same issue with my Echo -- 42 mpg and an 11 gallon tank equaled almost eight hours on one tank of gas on the highway. My monthly gas budget back then was $30, now it is closer to $300, due to the poorer gas mileage, higher prices and moving 2X farther from work. :(
