    Dad's Last Truck

for the kayak carry, I'm using a $55 'universal cross bar' rack from ebay. It's fine for lighter loads such as a kayak or single canoe. Used Shoe Goo on my tonneau gasket, it's a tough waterproof glue, should be able to find it in hardware store.

    Temperature

best guess is your old thermostat wasn't working right- not closing fully. Heat up to halfway in about 5min is what mine always did, both before and after radiator replacement and system flushed with water 3x before refill. The pic shows a gauge that looks a little high to me, mine doesn't...

    2004 4x2 XLS

147 000 miles so far June 2021 bought at 96 000 in 2017 stock everything except for a 2nd-hand Century topper. Still have the tonneau cover and bed extender. The extender is handy for hauling yard waste, mattresses and other furniture, etc etc. What a great little truck. known fixes so far: -...

2022 Ford Maverick revealed — hybrid pickup gets 37 mpg, costs $21,490

I hope to keep my ST until 200k or so, should get me another 5-6 years, then see what the second-hand market for Mavericks looks like.. If I could afford a new car it would be very tempting..

    I Bought It

for $300, very much worth it I think.. will be interested to see how much the new engine runs..

    Is it just me...

never (yet) occurred to me to worry about that.. as the Eds say, every rotor I've touched in forty-plus years of banging on cars, has that same nut and cotter pin.. there's not much unscrewing force on the nut, certainly not enough to break a cotter pin.. made me look...

What to do when you need to replace your beloved ST?

I could go either way on this - once had a turbo Subaru Legacy 2.5L, it didn't even notice the mountains, steady 70mph through everything - and it lasted until 225k and Cash for Clunkers, was still running great when I turned it in on a new shiny Honda. OTOH my son's WRX is great when it's...

What to do when you need to replace your beloved ST?

I like the looks of this too, but it seems it will start at $35k, a bit ambitious for me. 275hp with a dual clutch auto in that thing, should be a lot of fun to drive. Probably will look at a used Nissan Frontier next, a friend has one and it's been reliable and good on bad roads..

    need opinions

there was a handsome red 2004 locally, for $1000, needed a new transmission. I was sorely tempted but didn't have anywhere to keep it. Kinda wanted to buy it and keep it in reserve for later..

    radiator petcock

picked one from the bottom price end of Premium listing at Rockauto, paid $99 and it seemed better made than the OEM one which had started leaking.. everything fit perfectly, simple install. This is a plastic one, but given the OEM one lasted 16 years, I don't worry about it.. An aluminum one...

Looking to trade my Cap for a Tonneau Cover

I paid $300 for a white Century cap in bad shape. Quotes for a new one ran $1500-$2000. $500 would be a very fair price for yours. Problem is there isn't much of a market for them, and it's all local.. I could sell you an oem tonneau cover, but it's in Colorado ;-)

    overdrive/output speed sensor problem

no, the lack of coolant could not cause the mpg or the fuel sensor code. The mpg drop is most likely caused by the bad fuel sensor.. my 2004 had both those things happen. Replaced the fuel sensor as mentioned in the thread that swshawaii linked to, improved mileage and ran more smoothly after...

    Thumping noise

center carrier bearing is a good suggestion.. I used to have a Hillman Vogue with a split driveshaft, after 1000 miles from S. Africa to Harare Zimbabwe, it started thumping.. was able to find a shade tree mechanic to replace the u-joint but the rubber around the bearing was destroyed and no...

    Dancing 05 STA 2WD

my 2004 used to shake its butt like a go-go dancer.. on dirt washboard roads it would shimmy back and forth, an adventure on every turn.. new shocks made a big difference, I got KYB front and rear. Absolute horrorshow installing the rears, the top fasteners are hidden away. never thought of...

    Rear shocks

I got the KYB ones, front and rear. They are a great improvement on the stock shocks..

    "Check Gage" Warning Light 2002

2 gal is what I measured, in my 2004.. so 30-40 miles, if yer feeling lucky ;-) try not to get anywhere near that personally but my wife likes to run it down..

New and wondering why I want an STA so bad

hate to say it but for a small pickup, Nissan Frontier is probably the best value currently.. STAs and Tacomas are great trucks but the second-hand market is insane on these. I see lots of STAs for sale with over 200k. My sense is that as long as well treated, not thrashed at high rpms or...

Key will not turn in ignition - happened 3 times so far

yes, the keys/lock tumblers will wear out.. happened in my 98 Sienna after sixteen years, luckily had one key not much used, and just got new keys cut from it every few years. happened in 09 Honda Fit, had to rebuild the lock cylinder ($800 for the part available only from dealer, how I love...

    Code Reader recomendations

I bought a Harbor Freight standalone one, because the OBD adapter I have (cheap Chinese one) couldnt' read the codes for a WRX for some reason ? The program I use on my Android phone is Torque and it's good, has worked well on several different cars including the SportTrac. Anyway the Zurich...

What's the deal with the running boards?

interesting, my 04 didn't have running boards when I bought it.. don't much care for them generally, my wife's MDX has them and mostly they just make dirt marks on my pants.. Used to have a 98 Sienna with running boards. One day I stepped on it to reach something on the roof racks and it...
