I figured it out. Aftermarket LED brake light had shorted out. All is well now and I have a new instrument cluster! Could be worse!

Everything seems to be fine but one fuse. The “battery saver, interior lights” fuse 10A.

I replaced the alternator and the battery (for free, they were on warranty) and cleaned the terminals and tightened them down and it works! Fuel gauge reads empty which could be right for all I know, probably not though. All the other gauges work though!

Also it made a loud buzzing noise when I disconnected the negative terminal. Almost louder than the engine idling. Alternator seems to be charging though. Ran around 14.7V running and 12.7V even after spitting fire.

It blew flames out of that hole next to the handle. Singed the handle. Was I not supposed to remove the negative terminal? Is there a voltage regulator somewhere that’s bad? I’m very confused.

Update: tried testing the alternator by disconnecting the negative terminal and the battery caught fire. So there’s that.

Sent it to circuit board medics and got it back today. Installed it and still having the same issue. Any other ideas?

Don’t know if this got skipped over because of the holiday or if this is stumping everyone else. Figured I’d comment again to see if it catches anyone’s eyes.

I’m at 210k now and when I took of the cover I couldn’t see any serious wear. Just a lot of bad fluid. I may look into a rebuild though. I’m pretty sure there’s a bad axle somewhere. My rear tires wear way faster than the front.

I managed to do it but it’s still leaking. Less than before but leaking nonetheless. Hardest part is seating the seal. That’s probably what messed up. I’ll probably just watch it for the time being and refill as we go until I get the money to have a professional look at it.

So I replaced fluid and gasket (it definitely needed it) and it’s been three days and noticed a leak. I believe it’s the pinion seal, I’ve seen some videos but would like y’all’s affirmation. Is this a job one could do at home or should a shop do it?

Mine is RWD. 2005 XLT 8.8 inch ten bolt diff.

So I went and checked my manual to see how much oil I’d need and it looks like the weight is the same regardless of the type of diff. Am I missing something here? Mine is an open diff after more research thanks to y’all’s tips.

I’ve got plenty of experience working on this thing! From the front wheel bearings and rotors to body mounts to fuel pump. I enjoy it. Lol. I appreciate the shortcut though, but it probably needs a good inspection. 210k probably on the original fluid.
