I solved the storage issue in the bed of my 01 with a rubbermaid bin made to go under a bed. It's low enough profile I can stack suit cases on top of it and still see out the rear window. Removed the wheels, and filled it up. Jumper cables, 4-way, tow strap, socket set, wrench set, rags, disposable latex gloves, and an old set of coveralls. Pushed it all the way forward under the rear window, and I keep a broomstick with a hook screwed into the end to reach up in there to drag it back when I need something out of it. Of course, since I have a topper, it is secured (as much as can be) and weatherproof.
For anyone with bad knees, or just short in stature, I recommend the broomstick with a hook idea. My FIL showed me, and I wouldn't be with out it. I is so handy to be able to reach inside the bed all the way to the front and pull whatever to the rear without climbing in.
