Got a friend with a 89 olds Ciera with a 3.3. The car starts and idles but as soon as you give it gas it dies. Then after about 5 min of this, It just doesn't start at all. he had the fuel filter replaced last week with air filter.

We cleaned the basics... I did not put a pressure gage on the fuel yet, but i am thinking pump as I can keep the car running with spraying gas in the intake.

But then all of a sudden the car runs fine for 2-3 min drives OK, then just Dies. then does the start and idle but if you rev it, it will rev up and just die like you shut off the ignition.

Now it had a CEL with the TPS code 2 weeks ago but that went off which i thought was weird.

I am thinking fuel pump. Or fuel injectors.

Thanks in advance !!!!!!

I would use a VOM and check the TPS anyway. It is part of the feed back loop for the fuel.

It could be the TPS...

As mentioned above, test it to see if it has a constant and smooth reading all the way through from idle to WOT.

Basically, if the TPS is bad, when you open the throttle up you get the air but not the fuel as the TPS is not telling the ECM you are asking for additional fuel.

This is not to say you don't have a bad pump,, Just that you should test the TPS before much other work as it is both an easy test as well as can be the issue..

Update:

Fuel pressure fine......... TPS volts FINE.........

Ohm the injectors...... 1 was at 12.5... perfect.... 4 were at 10.7...... and 1 was a 4 !!!!

Disconnected the 4 ohm injector, Car ran and drove..... Plugged in the 4 ohm and it shut right down !!!

So Time for a 6 pack of injectors..... Gonna get rebuilds and new is just not worth it !!

Will let you all know !!
