This was announced yesterday on the local news here in CT. :

(Middletown-WTNH) _ Customers of the Town and Country auto dealership claim they have been left out in the cold after the business suddenly closed up shop.

Some bewildered customers are without their cars and close to 200-employees no longer have jobs.

Brian Mulvey recently bought a 2001 Nissan Frontier for $9,000 at Middletown's Town and Country Auto Sales Incorporated. Brian would have to bring his truck back to Town and Country at least four times for an alignment problem. Little did he

know he would soon have a bigger problem.

The dealership provided a rental car from Enterprise and it was Enterprise that told Brian something he could not believe.

"I got a call from the rental car company that the dealership closed, and had to return the truck today or otherwise I had to be liable for it," said Mulvey.

The Town and Country dealership, run by Steven and Rob Augerie, has been a staple in Middletown for almost 50 years. Officially, the dealer shut its doors on Friday, but many customers found out about the closure Monday.

Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce president Larry McHugh says about 170 people are out of a job.

"It's not only the loss of the jobs and the taxes, but the continuity of a family run business for many, many years," said McHugh.

As for Mulvey, he got his truck back, but it still isn't fixed.

"I called the owner and left a message for him, trying to find out what I should do. When I spoke to a manager at the place where I bought the truck, he actually told me to go and get a lawyer," said Mulvey.

We had a family-run lumber, hardware and home building center business go out of business a couple of years back in our community. It was over 75 years old. It couldn't compete with Lowes and Home Depot. They had hundreds of employees, from those working in the store, the warehouse, the lumber yards, and crews of installers that would install products (siding, decks, kitchen cabinets, replacement windows, etc).

One day the doors were simply locked and a sign on the door that said: Out of business.

It happens. Most of the employees I talked to said they knew for almost 10 years that their days were numbered....they just assumed they would get some type of notice. I didn't want to rub salt into an open wound, but 10 years of watching your company go down the tubes seems like "notice" to me.

Evolve or die.

It's just really, really sad. My brother worked at this exact dealership here in Middletown, Ct for over 10 years before he moved on. Oh well. Such is life.
