I don't even live in tornado alley and had two tornadoes come close by the house on the same day...the edge of the supercell that spawned them was literally right over the house, with the cloud base only a few hundred feet up...scary to see the churning black underbelly of a cloud close enough to nearly touch and the air raid sirens going off in the background.

I may be going out on a limb here, but here is what I read in Woppy's comment.

If you live in the flood plain that floods year after year, you have no right to complain about you getting flooded out. I will not feel sorry for you either. Now, if you live on a mountain and you get flooded out, then I will feel for you.

The best I ever heard was a friend tell me they would rather have their house destroyed by a hurricane than deal with one Ohio winter. They got their wish the same year they moved to Florida. They got a visit from Hurricaine Andrew.

They "deal" with Ohio winters again. One storm was enough for them.

Note that there is a difference between hurricanes and tornadoes. A hurricane, you basically know it's coming although not necessarily how bad it will be. With tornadoes all you really get is a warning when conditions are right to form them and much, MUCH less time to get out of the way. The warning window is a lot smaller and that's provided you're around a radio or TV to get the warning. If the siren is your first warning it's too late so just go and hide as best you can. They can pop up anywhere, either one or twelve, and they're real unpredictable suckers too.

Heard a comedian on XM over the winter, he says "Yeah, every year we get a blizzard and CNN is showing video at a bar in Key West and there's some fat guy in a Hawaiian shirt with a beer saying, 'Yup, that's why I don't live up there'. Well, now I'm looking at your flat house and saying, 'Yup, that's why I don't live down there."

I like Florida's weather, but the people are insane. Most are snowbirds or grandpa and grandma from "up north" who only go to the grociery store at 5pm in the afternoon when others are trying their best to get home from work.

I've never understood why anyone would live by the Florida coast in a trailer home. Kind of like playing Russian Roulette.

I agree with Johnny O. Big difference between a tornado and hurricane. I did not feel sorry for those people in New Orleans. They had plenty of warning to get out. Tornado's though kind of sneak up on you.
