Made another repair on the 05 Escape this weekend. The ABS light came on and the dash message said check brakes and 4X4 problem. After checking the wonders of the internet, I found info that was exactly the problem. It was a cracked tone ring. It's on the end of the half shaft and it's what gives the ABS sensor a signal. It really wacked out the computer and even made it drive with a noticeable problem. $15 for the new ring, a little effort to get it on the axle and we're back on the road again.:driving:

I guess I have that to look forward to on the wife?s 2010 Escape. It's in the shop now getting a $4000 transmission replacement! Ford won't touch it with 115k miles even though it has been in for 3 drivers side CV axles and a trans cooler within the last year. (it had extended warranty)

Mark, the info I found said it was a very common problem. Not sure if it improved with newer year vehicles or even on newer years. If anyone has to make this repair, just make sure you clean off all the rust where the new tone ring goes. The new ring didn't seem like it was going to fit, but after cleaning the rust off with a small dremel tool and a little grease, it finally went on. Use the old ring to hammer it on.
