I forgot to let you know that in order to completely remove Norton off your computer you need to go to thier site and download a "removal tool" for the type of program you have. It's kindof a PITA, but it gets it ALL off. This is if you want to remove it to put on AVG. If not don't worry about it. Norton likes to put on "Ghost" programs that also take up space and memory and don't usually come off with the original removal.

By the way, did you get it up and running? (the computer);)

Have you checked on "msconfig" and looked at the "boot" and "startup" columns there to see if something is out of whack? Also, while I was checking on Norton for you, did you do anything with Norton when you put it on? Like any of the clean up processes or anything? Also, what (if you can remember) did you do right before this all happened? There is something missing when it won't boot in regular mode and will in safe mode. When mine did this it wouldn't work in either mode, (safe or regular log on would just stall at windows startup), so I didn't mean to scare you if I did in your last post.;)

Nope you didn't scare me. I've worked with computers (i.e. AutoCad) for since the mid 80's, but since I was not allowed to do anything admin. related since the US Army COE moved from DOS to WinNT. That, and I have just got burned out on tweaking my OS. The last time I got a BSOD was at work before I retired, and the result was totally dead in the water. That is why I suspected a virus or something.

No, I have not done anything to remove Norton Sys. Wks. The '06 ver. would not load in Safe Mode. This really has me baffled, and really do appreciate all of your help.

If it's a virus try going to stopsign.com and use thier free scan. I've done this on ones that "Block" your current virus detector. The one there will tell you what you have but you have to pay them to remove it. What I did was let it scan my computer, tell me what was on it, then look the virus up on the internet andfind out how to manually remove it. You will know if you have one like that because it will also block out all websites for Norton, Mcaffey, etc.

Another site I found helpful was winxptalk.com. Alot of smart computer people there also.;)
