I want to hook up my extra Directv dvr to my laptop. Any suggestions. I've found USB stuff for 19$ all the way to 100$. What should I or could I use.....?

LaRue,

Are you just wanting to watch TV/movies on your computer, or are you wanting to capture/record the video/audio from the DVR onto your harddrive?

LaRue,

For just watching, I would think a USB adapter for HDMI or Component Video ouput. If your laptop has an HDMI port then you just need an HDMI cable.

Not sure why you would want to watch TV or Movies on your Laptop since the DVR is not really portable, and the quality will not be as good as watching it on a digital or HD TV.

I have a 25" monitor hooked into my laptop which sits in the corner on a stand. I have a 19" hdtv upstairs on my alarm dvr, just didn't want anything else on my desk. You know me, just HAVE to fight the norm.....

My laptop has a HDMI port,,, so you are saying I can just hook the dvr to my laptop with a HDMI cable and nothing else is needed.?

LaRue,

I think the question really is how to hookup your DVR's OUTPUT to your PC Monitor's INPUT???

Ideally your monitor is one of the newer ones that has various input formats, DVI, HDMI, etc.

You can try the HDMI port on your laptop, but I would suspect that might be output only, not input.

Possibly, it depends if your laptop accepts HDMI input, or only outputs on the HDMI port. Most only do output.

Do you have to go through the laptop at all?

Good point! If you have various monitors, why do you need to go through the laptop?

If the PC monitor is not an HDTV you might need to see what kinds of ports it has...some have standard VGA, but some have Digital Video input. Either way, you would still need an adapter cable. I would definitely try to get the Laptop out of the loop if it is not needed. Heck, 19-26 inch flat panel TV's are so cheap now it would probably be worth buying a new HDTV to use as a PC monitor. They usually have HDMI, Components, and VGA/DVI PC ports, plus they have a built in tuner, so you can use it anyway you want.

I only have vga and dvi-d inputs. Might just have to spend some money and get a hdtv that i can use for both. (time for a new monitor any way, mines 5 years old hehe) mmmm any suggestions???

LaRue,

I have a 26" HDTV (1080i) that I use in my office, but primarily for a TV. I move it into my guest room when I have company. I also have a 22" Acer flat panel PC monitor that I have watched a couple of streaming NetFlix movies, and DVD's on it and it has a very good picture.

If you are looking for a dual purpose TV/PC monitor, it's pretty hard to beat a Samsung. They have very high contrast ratios which is what makes the picture pop and look very life-like.

LaRue,

Before he went off to college we bought our son a 22" Visio HD TV/monitor.

See the link below.

It has the Internet Apps for Netflix, Amazon, Pandora, etc, built-in (free) and it can work as a PC or PC monitor, or DVR monitor, etc.

Very versatile.

LaRue,

Also for sale today only on Woot is a Toshiba, 24" LED-LCD, true HD at 1080p with all the inputs you are looking for and an integrated DVD player (the only negative, IMHO), all for $244.99 delivered to your door.
