I've used AVG exclusively for a year now and have had no major issues with it. The only thing that gets in is spyware and that's with 3 anti-spyware programs on my PC.

Used to have Norton and experienced all sorts of problems from slow PC performance to crashed hard drive.

For my money AVG has worked very well, it's FREE!

Also I use a free version of spybot. It will catch most adware and protect your registry with teatime. _Ron

I've used AVG for about five years...swear by it and it's price!

For the spyware, I run Spybot and Ad-aware and SpyBlaster. It takes all three but combined they do a good job.

I have used PC-cillin in the past and it sucks. I tested it with many viruses I downloaded off the net. It would miss 5 out of ten. AVG found them all.

I use AVG.

Get an old IBM Aptive W/Windows '93 upgraded to a windows '95!

Nobody cares to bust that system! 1 virus in 9 years!

It's like trying to steal an old Edsel!!! Nobody Cares!;)

I use SurfinGuard Pro from Finjan. It does not require updates or virus signatures. It blocks viruses based on their behavior.

Any executable file or email attachement recieved via the Internet is run in a safe area and monitored to insure that it contains no unfreindly actions that a common most viruses. Files cannot attempt to modify your registry, access you email address book, reproduce themselves, write files, delete files, etc.

Of course this only works for files downloaded from the Internet or received in emails. It does not work if you get an infected floppy or CD from someone, but I don't accept any files accept via the Internet or email and I have never had a single virus incident on any of my PC's.

I do have Microsofts Anti-Spyware as well as AdAware and I have not encountered any Spyware on my system since I installed the Beta version of MS Anti-Spyware. It does seem to work better than AdAware and SpyBot S&D

Rich, is that Microsoft Anti-Spyware the Windows Defender Beta 2? How does it seem to do on your system? I had it on mine and it really would act wierd. It made my internet really slow and sometimes it wouldn't let the internet come up at all. (even though I was connected to the internet.) Just took it off a couple days ago and my internet is back to what it was before I installed it. (Verizon DSL) Just wondering if you experienced any problems. I'll just have to stick with my Adware and Spybot for now.;)

stonemiser,

Yes. I started with the original MS Anti-Spyware a few years ago and updated to the new Defender Beta version that they came out with.

I have not noticed any slowdowns or problems with Defender Beta. I did have AVG on my laptop for a while and had to take it off after it started slowing my system and crashed when I tried to do a scan. I later downloaded a new copy and it ran OK but I don't really like that it start up at boot-up and immediately starts to check for updates. I have used other Anti-Virus software that gave you the option of when you wanted to check for updates, and only when you wanted to do a scan. That's why I don't use the anti-virus software and use SurfinGuard Pro instead.

Rich, thats wierd with AVG. I've had no problems what-so-ever with it. Mine doesn't try to update as soon as I start windows. I physically check for updates when I start it up. Only reason I do is because there is usually a new virus definition update everyday. I do it before I check my e-mails. Just got in the habit of doing it.

My Defender was always having to change a registry value every time I booted the computer up. It was always for the Defender program also. (not some other program) So, I don't know. I was just curious since you mentioned you had it and you're the first person I heard that had it. Thanks for the reply though.

Roger and Georgia, didn't mean to "jack" your thread. Sorry.;)

stonemiser,

I probably just turned on the option for AVG to automatically update and was too lazy to go find that switch and turn it off. I have SurfinGuard Pro, so I don't really need any other anti-virus software unless I bring in files on diskettes or CD, etc.

I've used AVG for as long as I can remember. I recommend it to anybody who asks about anti-virus software. People install so much useless crap on their computer that slows it down. Anti-virus, spyware, etc, etc...

I run AVG, windows firewall, and sitting behind a secure router. I havent had a virus since the 90's, and I'm spyware free. I run adware about once a month, rarely finds anything.

Here's my recommendation. Dump Internet Explorer, and get Mozilla Firefox, say goodbye to annoying popups, better security, and no spyware. Tons of add-ons and plugins. Customized to your liking and you'll never look back at IE.
