I am looking for advice on good antivirus/spyware programs...I need to remove this b.exe trojan that ended up on my new dell pc the other night...any help would be great guys!

Can't remember if it was the same one, I don't think it was, but I had a small but annoying virus for a while that Norton wouldn't get rid of. I found it but couldn't delete it right there. What ended up working was going into Windows Explorer, moving it to Desktop, reboot, then move it it Recycle Bin and delete it from there. Use at your own risk.

www.TwoCows.com has some freebie antivirus I think.

I always recommend AVG Free Antivirus for all my clients.

You can get it at http://free.grisoft.com .

For spyware/malware combination - Spybot Search & Destroy, Adaware, and if you are running Windows XP, download Windows Defender from Microsoft which is also free.

dennis, I have used Norton and McAffe both and got a virus with both. I now use AVG and nothing yet. It's a smaller program than the other two and doesn't eat up your system memory. Go to downloads.com and type in a search for AVG. It's free and will update just about everyday instead of every thurs. like the others. Also, another thing to do is go to microsoft.com and download thier "Malicious Software Reamoval Tool". It is updated every time something new comes out and it will run and remove it.;)

sonemiser - thanks, I forgot about the malicious software removal tool. Good one to have if you are already infected. :)

well I got symantec corp edition just now from a friend now the red shield for windows is saying I dony have any antivirus enabled......

Dennis,

I will agree with the above posts on AVG. I have been using it for a few years now and thankfully no virus. Here is a link. Hope it helps.

I have run for many years without any Anti-Virus software, and I have never been infected because I have Surfin-Guard by Finjan Software.

Surfin-Guard is a passive type of anti-virus that does not require virus signiture files to catch possible viruses. Anything entering your system via email, email attachments or downloaded off the Internet are monitored for any executable files. If that executable tries to do any of the things that viruses must do to reproduce, modify files, access your address book, send emai, modify your registry, etc it is blocked.

In my opinion, it is the only truely effective Anti-Virus that can catch an stop a virus, even if you were the first person in the world to get it.

Of course, if you frequently get files on CD, Diskette, or any other portable file media, you will need a regular anti virus. That is also true if you pass files around on a LAN and all PC's are vulnerable.

dennis, seriously, get rid of symantec. It is a huge system hog. My computer is quick but when I had Norton on there it was SLOW. Especially my internet. Now it is back where it should be performance wise. Be sure and go to symentec's website and download the removal tool for the type of symentec crap you have on there. It will remove EVERYTHING including the ghost crap they put on there. It frees up ALOT of space on your computer.;)

dennis,

I just had the same problem. I ran all the extra adware/spyware software and it would not get rid of the problem. It is because the virus is a trojan that attacks files that are blocked from certain protection programs.

With that said, on the website bleepingcomputers.com you will find a program called vundofix.exe. This will get rid of your problem and only take you 5 - 10 minutes.
