Backup camera install

I have a Pioneer AVIC-D3 in my 07 Sport Trac. I want to install a compatible rear camera. I am thinking that the F150 tailgate handle with camera could work??



Anyone done something similar? The Projects folder is silent". I know my Pioneer has the rear/backup feature. I know I can wire in any camera but I like the OEM look of the Ford tailgate handle with camera.

Amazon lists a kit - "Camera Source CS-FTR1" that looks OEM and says it will fit the F series and Sport Tracs. It replaces the Ford blue oval badge on the tailgate.

Aloha Steve, The only problem that I see is backing with the tailgate down. Mine is on the license plate and is out of the way. the biggest thing is running the cables and wiring to the back up lights.

I did the Ford handle camera on mine. Check out my photo library. The Ford handle is pricey but I do like how it looks. Generic eBay camera, wireless module in the tailgate powered by the back up lights. Wireless receiver at the main unit. I do get some interference at times when the camera is on. I'm guessing it's all the wireless internet signals. Don't buy the Ford camera. It's expensive and you'll have to figure out all the wiring.

Brad, Would you still have part numbers for the handle? My research so far is not coming up with F150 handles supposedly compatible with my 07 SportTrac.

I've found the bare handle on eBay for around $15.

Generic eBay camera, wireless module in the tailgate powered by the back up lights. Wireless receiver at the main unit.

Could you share specifics on where you bought these parts? I'm looking to do something similar to my Trac.

TrainTrac, On eBay I fill in those compatibility charts and they say 'not compatible' with SportTrac. Exactly which handle did you get?

It's a pipe dream for me to get a camera on mine, would have to find a (my) budget friendly replacement unit.



Ed, do you have any pictures of your backup camera? On the license plate would be good for me until the white stuff flies hahahahahahahah...:sad:

Check out this one. The Gen 2 Trac and F-series trucks shared a tailgate handle for several years. Look at this one. It's the same handle as what's on our Gen 2 Tracs.

I built my own with a camera from Amazon years ago with Pioneer AVIC receiver. ST was totaled.

I'll look around, I think I still have that info. That eBay handle is generic, no oem. The paint to match handle is smooth. And I'll take a pic of my screen with the camera on and add it to my library.

Ford handle: 8L3Z-9943400BBPTM (Discontinued)

Camera: Pyle PLCM24IR

Wireless: Audiovox ACA-300



Handle is only available generic. Paint to match is smooth, regular black one is textured. Camera is online several places. I used this one because of its viewing range. They're rated by degrees. Wider the better. You'll have to modify the camera hole in the handle. I used a round file and glued it in with silicone. The wireless setup is online. I saw a couple on eBay. You WILL get interference with wireless. Not all the time but a lot. If you're trying to hook it to the factory nav unit it requires an interface unit. Got mine from coastal tech. That'll set you back $250-300. Yeah. The interface does other things also. Hey it's only money... Bear in mind the parts I used were for rca jack connections. I uploaded a pic of my screen to my library. My driveway slopes up so in reality you can see farther that in the picture. Any other questions just ask.

I bought the inexpensive wireless unit from one of the auto parts store and took the camera off the license plate frame, cut a hole through the bumper behind the plate, cut a round hole in the plate and mounted the camera there. It works decent and works with the tailgate down. I just wish I had put a switch in so I could trigger it on when not in reverse....that would come in handy sometimes. Picks of my installation are in my library if interested.

I went through about four or five of the license plate bracket units. The cameras just don't hold up in the cold and wet weather here in the north.

The tailgate latch with camera that I installed ~ 2 years ago recently broke. New one ordered to replace the broken one, Econut Backup Camera . The new one is from the same mold as the broken one, so it will likely break if not reinforced.

It breaks in the location shown on the attached picture because there is a sharp internal corner that concentrates stress when the latch is operated. It will break there after so many cycles, then you have some work to do to get the tailgate open without damaging it. I used wood flour/epoxy paste, a putty like JB Weld would work here also. Make sure you build up some radius at this sharp internal corner to reduce stress and make the part much stronger.

Camera is excellent, better than what Ford put on my 2016 Mustang and 2020 Edge

Do replacement stereo head units ( my OEM is without NAV) plug into the existing speaker and woofer/ amps that come in the ST? Mine is an Adrenalin so I believe there is amps under the rear seat and the subwoofer in the rear panel.
Or alternatively do I need to replace or bypass these?
Also anyone try hooking up two cameras, one rear and one on the front as well?

I had the same thing happen everything all wired up and worked great, but over the last couple of months the camera got wet (plate camera) I am waiting on this one to come in, tommorow, but trying to figure out how to route the wiring into the tailgate and not cut or crimp buy mistake.
Mine is a 2010 Adrenalin with a Kenwood head unit.
