Changing the Diff Fluid

Hey guys, going to be changing my dif fluid on my 4.10 LS in the next few days. already got the fluids and friction modifyer from ford. noticed that there is no draing plug, so I'll have to do it the hard way. is there anything I should know before cracking my dif open?

DO not spray the bearings or any thing with a cleaner....

Using simple towels or rags will do the trick to get it clean...

YOU also do not have to crack it open, YOU can suck out the fluid and replace it...

It may not get 100% of the old out, but it saves you the work if you don't want to do it..

I like using a paper gasket with a thin film of silicone sealant rather then just silicone for the gasket....

i agree with Todd, i bought the felpro gasket for like $6 at

advance auto and if you don't know your own strength like me

get your self a torque wrench.

one more thing before taking the cover off

"MAKE SURE YOU CAN GET THE FILL PLUG OUT"

would be hell of a thing if you cant get it out and have

all the gear oil drained.

Thats when you drill a 3/4 inch hole in the back and use a DODGE truck rubber diff plug...

HAHAHAHA

Can you tell I did that once....

The owner destroyed the plug and did not care how we fixed it...

FWIW, there is no way to change the front diff lube (if you have a 4x4) without a suction machine. Unless you want to drop the whole diff. Crossmember is in the way of the cover.
