Check engine question

I have a 2002 Sport Trac and need some advice. The check engine light came on right after I checked the oil dip stick. About a month before the light came on it started to sputter when I put it in reverse... it revs up & down, but not in drive or park. Do you think the sputtering and the check engine light are related? Is this something I can fix myself? Step-by-step instructions would be greatly appreciated.

You can be sure that it has nothing to do with the dipstick.

I don't know. I put my dipstick in back-wards once and the Trac wouldn't go into reverse.

I put my oil cap on backwards and George4073 would not let me close my hood till he fixed it,...
