And, my daughter's whole familys (5) flight was canceled. She said that whole airport is shut down due to lightning taking out the guidence system. What really sucks is that neither the airline or the airport is paying for their room for the night. Just had to vent my frustration.

They won't pay for rooms because it's not their fault mother nature decided to create a lightning storm. I spent a day and a half on New Years Eve in the airport because of a snow storm. They didn't do anything for us either. I slept on the baggage belt...LOL

I'm sorry your family is stuck with an unplanned night in Chicago, and that it will cost them money. I'm sure that will put a damper on their travel budget.

It's common that airlines will not pay anything for weather-related delays. They have no control over the weather, and for safety reasons they cannot take chances that endanger the lives of their passengers.

Our airport in OKC was hit by lightning today as well, and seven UPS employees were injured.

I would say that really does suck. My wife and I had to stay in an airport one night because the Amarillo airport was shut down do to snow. But at least they did offer a hotel room even if it was only for three hours before the plane would leave. _Ron

I was en-route there but could not land due to weather. Diverted to Indianapolis. Captain announce we would wait on the tarmac until the weather was clear and then head to Midway.

Well.... I made a cal to see the details and was informed by the FAA that it would be HOURS before the plane would be allowed to take off. So I called my supervisor and suddenly stairs arrived for me and my partner to get off the plane. We got ourselves rooms. I just checked the flight status, it NEVER left Indianapolis and has been canceled due to weather.

So everyone sat there for 2 hours only to be taxied to a gate and sent out to search for rooms.

We were lucky we got off when we did as we had hard times finding rooms, I can only imagine how bad it is now to get a room.

All airports are back up and running, some on delays, but all are open.

Had to wait for 8 hr delay in Canada once, because of snow storm. Being in an aiport for that long made me go crazy .

My cousin once was held on a full plane from Saturday evening until Monday morning in Duluth, MN. Weather delayed their ability to land, until around 7pm. The problem then was that it was an international flight--and at that time in Duluth, the Customs office was only open M-Sa 8a-6p. So they were forced to all sit on that plane, sharing the soon-overflowing bathroom and the limited food/water supplies, until the Customs office opened.

All things considered, just be glad your family is safe, and has a place to stay during the inconvenience. :)

I just flew in from New Jersey and 2 of my co-workers were stranded because of the same situation and they have to pay for their rooms as well. Luckily my flight made it in before the storm cancelled my co-workers incoming flights.

Here is a good site to look at when you plan travel.

Don't listen to pilots when they say "the air traffic controllers are delaying us", because it never has happened and never will. There is always a reason...weather, volume, equipment failure, but never ATC!
