I have the same clunk in my '02 explorer (thank god it's not in the trac) - Ford has replaced the rear end and the drive shaft and the clunk is still there - they are baffled
Mine will clunk if I accelerate hard and let off of the gas or when I give it gas after coasting.
I told the guy that when the transmission falls out one day - I will expect a free tow.
The new drive shaft did eliminate the vibration that I was getting when I accelerated going up hill though. The new rear end got rid of the whine in the rear end, but the elusive "clunk" still remains.
