cold and warm air

ok so i have a 2001 sport trac...no climate control or anything fancy like that. Turn the heat on and when it warms up we get hot air then cold then hot then cold and sometimes its all cold. Friend of mine tells me its a flap in the dash as it happened to his explorer. Cost him a thousand bucks as they had to rip the dash out and windshield to get at this 200 dollar flap...does this sound right and does anybody else have a quick fix?

There is a mixing door that can go bad, But I would check the lines going to the heater control valve under the hood first...

The door is called a "blend door." It can be fixed most times with some toothpicks and epoxy.

I will see if I can find it. I saw on one of the explorer forums how to fix it. The guy only pulled the glove box, I think.

Are you sure the antifreeze isn't low? That will cause your heater to put out cold or cooler air.
