Ok guys, this is the third computer question I've posted. The other two are pretty well taken care of. My father-in-law sent me a virus (32.mydoom). It shut off my antivirus and then wouldn't let me open it, system restore, or system reboot. I got it taken care of by surfing the web and finding one it would let me open and use thier "free online scan" (that is how I know what it was). Anywho, I got it pretty much taken care of. Everything runs fine and the computer seems to be ok except for it won't access microsoft's website. It does the same thing as when I tried to get onto antivirus sites. I can now get onto those site, just not microsoft (who has a scan that looks for and removes the threats). I have Norton Antivirus, Spyware Beta 1, and Spybot S&D. Nothing comes up. My worry is that it could block that it doesn't show up or get recognised after infecting the computer. I have done all the steps that Norton's site says to do and removed the items even from my registry. Not that accessing Microsofts site is that important to me but I just want to be sure I've got it all. I'd hate to have skipped something and be sending it to other people. Drives me nuts that people have nothing better to do with thier time than design crap like this.;)

If you are using Firefox, that is the problem. Microsoft will not allow features of their websites Microsoft.com, MSN, MSNBC, etc., to be accessed with browsers other than Internet Explorer. When using Microsoft websites, right click on the link to the page you want to reach, and select the option "Open Link Taget in IE". This will cause a new window to open with IE.

?????? I am using Firefox and have microsoft.com open at the moment..... and it appears to let me do everything I need to. My only problem has been Microsoft update... it doesn;t work with mozilla.

NelsonOKC, no, it's just Explorer. I didn't have any trouble with it before. Just now. I don't do the update stuff. I just can't get myself to do the SP2. got everything up to there. Did start haveing trouble getting certain things to download even when I was updating. Its a HP (I know) Pavillian with Athlon processor. Memory isn't a problem since I've installed a second board. 128MB original, 256MB second. My computer runs fine. No slow down or anything, but it didn't do that when I have the bug. The reason I noticed it was because my Norton Icon disappeared out of my tool bar. It scans my e-mails also and still didn't pick this up and I'm pretty religious on updating every week.(antivirus and spysweepers);)

Ok, I'm confused...

When I use Mozilla and I use it 99% of the time, it will download a MSN Media File and play it when its done downloading. Now, I download from reputable sites like MSN or CNN.

The reason I don't use IE is all the security problems it has. Is Mozilla any better?

Thanks,

SST

I use Firefox almost exclusively. I think it is awesome, but there is something (Firefox, Norton, or something else, that doesn't allow me to open media files in Firefox. As stated, microsoft update also doesn't work (this is due to the design of Microsoft's website).

stonemiser, you may have to update MS Internet Explorer. I believe you can do this without loading Windows SP2.

Stoney,

A few possibilities here:

1. You still have the virus, a different virus, or a different type of malicious logic. At least one version of 32.mydoom attempts to download an external file over the Internet and execute it.

2. The virus added Microsoft websites to your Restricted Sites list (see Internet Options > Security tab), or made a change to your DNS (Domain Name System) setting. You didn't say what the behavior of Internet Explorer was when you tried to access Microsoft or the anti-virus websites, but that information might be helpful. Try this: enter 207.46.20.60 into the IE address bar and hit enter. That's the IP address for Microsoft.com. If that number works you might have a DNS issue caused by a live virus, or just leftover from your dead one.( DNS servers translate IP addresses into human-readable addresses.)

Good luck

Lots of times a virus will change the hosts file to block sites that might fix the virus. To check for this search for a file named hosts. It is usually located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts . Depending on your operating system it may be WINNT instead of WINDOWS. You can open this file with notepad. Any of the entries that start with 127. can be removed. Then save the file and exit.

Stone,

Personally, I don't like Norton. I use a free antivirus called AVG. It's highly recommended in the computer world, considered one of the best, and it's free!! Also run Lavasoft's Ad Aware to clear off spyware and adware, and see if that helps.
