NBC reportedly paid $820M for the 2010 Winter Olympics broadcast rights.

According to GE, NBC's parent company, they expect to lose "a couple hundred million bucks" on the games.



Conan's payoff of up to $40M is the beginning of a very dismal year for the network.

Never cared much for Conan O'Brian. To be honest, I did not care for Leno much after he took over from "The Master" Johnny Carson. Over the years, Leno relaxed and got a lot much better. Had Conan stayed longer and started to get relaxed on Tonight Show he may have done quite well.



I was stationed in Indianapolis, IN when Letterman was there doing the weather and later a late night horror movie host on Saturday nights. I liked him then. but when he got the Late show on CBS I did not care for some of his material.



I like Leno best, then Letterman and Conan last.

IMO, Leno was the best. Conan's stupid gestures and quirks could sometimes be funny, but overall fell short for me. Leno also had a better go-to guy in the band than the others.



Letterman's top 10 lists have never impressed me at all.

I liked Leno...>Conan was ok, not the best ideal host out there but he did have his funny moments though.

imo, leno show is very good. conan when he started was very good, but the wheels fell off the bus.

as mentioned, if fairness to conan, nbc did not do the right thing.

What in the world does this have to do with our priorities, or the state of the country? It's a contract buy-out, plain and simple.



I've read in a couple places that Conan is actually going to be taking significantly less than that, in part because he's insisting as part of the negotiations that the buyouts to every single person on his staff be very substantial, and that he's putting in some of his own buy-out money to make sure of that. If that's the case, it goes a long way to explaining why both his staff and his fans are so dedicated and loyal.

Neither Jay nor Conan could ever fill Johnny Carson's shoes. Johnny was one of a kind. I'd rather watch his re-runs myself.

Whoa now, that sounds a lot like class warfare, which is the first step down the slippery slope to socialism. There will always be people with more money than you, or me. That is how the world works.

At least they're upholding their contract and Conan isn't being a punk about it, and is following suit of Leno and helping out his now disenfranchised staff, though Conan, while not too great IMO, really did get the shaft. He waited 17 years for this gig, and had it for only a few measly months, and beat himself up literally during those months.



If only Letterman would go off the air. If not for Sarah Palin and his affair, he would have had no material for several months.

I can't stand Leno. Just never thought he was funny. Always liked Letterman but his jokes are getting kind of stale. These days I'd rather read a good book than watch late night television. Much more entertaining to me.

Conan never deserved the "The Tonight Show" in the first place. He was never funny with his other show, he would be even less on The Tonight Show.
