THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!!!!! A friend sent this along to me. I can't think of a reason to disagree.

I am sending this to virtually everybody on my e-mail list and that includes conservatives, liberals, and everybody in between. Even though we disagree on a number of issues, I count all of you as friends. My friend and neighbor wants to promote a "Congressional Reform Act of 2009". It would contain eight provisions, all of which would probably be strongly endorsed by those who drafted the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

I know many of you will say, "this is impossible". Let me remind you, Congress has the lowest approval of any entity in Government, now is the time when Americans will join together to reform Congress - the entity that represents us.

We need to get a Senator to introduce this bill in the US Senate and a Representative to introduce a similar bill in the US House. These people will become American hero's..

Thanks,

A Fellow American

.Congressional Reform Act of 2010

1. Term Limits: 12 years only, one of the possible options below.

A. Two Six year Senate terms

B. Six Two year House terms

C. One Six year Senate term and three Two Year House terms

Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.

2. No Tenure / No Pension:

A congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.

Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.

3. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security:

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund moves to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, Congress participates with the American people.

Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, server your term(s), then go home and back to work.

4. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan just as all Americans.

Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.

5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.

6. Congress looses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.

7. Congress must equally abide in all laws they impose on the American people.

Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.

8. All contracts with past and present congressmen are void effective 1/1/11 .

The American people did not make this contract with congressmen, congressmen made all these contracts for themselves.

Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, serve your term(s), then go home and back to work.

If we could find one person from each state to run on this platform, imagine what we could do!

Add one more thing: Repeal the 17th Amendment to the Constitution and return election of Senators to the States' legislatures. That would restore one of the many checks and balances originally put in place by the Founding Fathers. Congress was originally set up so that the House represented the people, and the Senate represented the States' interests. Sadly, it's no longer that way.

Oh, and one more thing: PASS THE FAIR TAX!!!

I agree..this wouldbe the great change we need. 99% of our congress have become a bunch of self serving Bas...ds. The american public also have become selfish. A little pork here and there and the citizens are dupped. Thinking what they got serves the good of all...BS...

Get rid of Social Security. The last thing it needs is more people drawing from it, it is already in the hole forever.

In fact, Social Security is rapidly pushing towards making as many of their end-user services available online as they possibly can, as Social Security does not employ enough people to keep up with demand from the current mass of retirees...and a great deal of social security employees are retiring, and there are few workers to take their places, youth doesn't want to work for the gov't, it would seem.

If Congressmen pay into Social Security with their Congressional income, then they should be entitled to Social Security pay based upon that taxation when they retire, which would be a pension from Congress, which is against your point #2. Sure, it'd be a de facto Congressional pension, but a pension nonetheless.

FairTax, meh. Just repeal income tax. We don't need it, and since you're talking about what the Founders would agree with, they would never have agreed to Federal income tax.

Congressional members were expected to have jobs or at least business interests, say Washington and his Plantation, so that they would be concerned with the ramifications to the economy which would be wrought by potential laws that they could pass. This is an integrated check, which sadly Career Politicians such as Obama, break as the Career Politician lives in an ivory tower and has no idea how his lofty ideas will affect the economy.

KL, I agree with most of what you said, but Social Security would not be in the shape it is if Congress hadn't raided it numerouse times, against the original laws against such raids, 800 million dollar raids , several times. Put the money back with interest and see if it is still unworkable.. I think it would work as envisioned if it had been run as envisioned.

You're comparing apples to oranges. If you pay in, you deserve to receive benefits. SS is not a pension plan.

If the monies taken from SS were to be replaced and you taxed every dollar earned, SS would be fully funded at its current rate.

i AGREE 100%.

My only point of disagreement would be that 12 year term limits is way too long...6-8 years of any one person is more than enough. The President only gets 8 years to fullfill his promises to the people. Congressmen and Senators should be able to do the same.

Also, If you are taking away a retirement pension for Congressmen and Senators, most would not want to serve that long anyway and would welcome going back to their old civilian jobs....perhaps making licenses plates...:smile0007:

Les, but they'll be putting the money from their Congressional Salary into SS, and then their SS pay outs later on after retirement will reflect the money that they got from Congress, which arguably means that they will still be receiving pay for their work in Congress after they leave it.

SS is still a dumb idea. Why do we need to have our money taken away and then given back in 50 years or so after we start working? Though it's a cause no one will touch because it will be political suicide...but if we had term limits in the first place, the phrase "political suicide" would die out as it would be meaningless. :smile0006:

But wait, you say that SS isn't a pension plan? When did this happen?!! You're supposed to be able to live off of SS alone, same as the Minimum Wage! Wait, you mean the Leftists LIED to me? I can't believe it! :smile0017:
