Drove by Costco on the way to the shop on Saturday. Costco gas station had 8 cars deep to get gas. Wow, must be really big savings per gallon.



Then I got to thinking...



If it's 10 cents cheaper, which I doubt. Theory - A 20 gallon fill up I save $2.00. Plus, this Costco is minimum six miles away from any housing areas. At least where this one is located. So, the fuel burned to go and save pennies is it really worth it? Plus, are they burning gas idling while in that line?



I save more money by brewing my own coffee at home than going to get a Latte at Starbucks...LOL
 
I hear you. The same goes with the overall price of gas. I get between 18 and 20 MPG with my Trac. If I were to trade it on a car that gets 30 MPG, over the course of a year driving 15,000 miles, I would only save...



19 MPG burns 789 gallons of fuel.

30 MPG burns 500 gallons of fuel.



in the course of a year, I will spend about $2,122 over the year as opposed to spending $1349 over the year with the death trap. So for a savings of about $773.00/year I get to ride like a sardine having to watch for every bump on the road, slow down over railroad tracks, and look at headlights in my face oll the time.



All to save about 14 bucks a week.



I just laugh at those, like you said, that will look for the cheapest gas they can find to save 2 bucks on a full tank.



I save even more money by drinking tap water and leaving the coffee in the store.



Save even more gas by going into the bank, drug store, quickie mart, and fast food joint. It is usually faster too.

The key is to plan your gas stops and know which stations are generally cheapest. I live right by the Interstate, all 4 stations are typically 8-12 cents more than a store thats near my work. I simply make sure I fill up after leaving work once a week or so, which costs me no extra and nets me the full $2.00 in savings. If in dire need I'll stop near my house, but otherwise just plan your fillups.
 
we had the same thing here in NJ yesterday lines at all the stations

on south broad st. here in trenton, i think there must have been

something on the news about prices going up as it was

up 10 cents a gallon at each of those same stations but last evening.



it has gone up an average of 20 cents over the last 8 days.

I like the sardine can story, Caymen. It's true. I'd also rather pay the extra $14 a week and ride the ST. :cool:
 
Put Costco gas in your car if you want to destroy your engine. I know several people that have had to have thier injectors replaced or cleaned and each time they were told not to buy cheap gas. Different cars, different mechanics, Costco gas. I only go to Shell or Chevron.
 
I use the cheapest gas I can buy. Always have. On my 1992 Escort, when funds were low and I was out of gas, I would pour Isopropyl Alcohol into the tank. Sometimes 5 gallons worth.



The body gave out at 135,000 miles. The engine still ran great.



The whole "cheap gas" ideas is bogus...IMO. But, I have only been driving for 16 years and over 750,000 miles between work and personal vehicles and have never had a problem with a fuel injector on anything.

it all comes from the same place in your area......... less than 2 gals of additive per 9000 gals of gas tham makes it shell vs el cheapo ect..............
 
Well if I were to use cheap gas I would be doing exactly what the guys at Costco are doing. I'd have to drive out of my way to find cheap gas. Texaco, Shell and Chevron are the main gas stations in my area. I'm not driving an extra 4 miles to go to an ARCO for cheap gas.
 
I see "cheap gas" stations all the time and usually there are a line of cars waiting to get some...I can't see sitting in line waiting my turn to fill up and burning all that extra fuel just to save maybe 2 bucks.



I have seen some "no name" dealers that have sold gas "cheap", but at the same time, some got caught adding water to their tanks. Not worth the risk, so I only use name brand stations.
 
I don't know the prices in other areas of the country, but just down the road from me....

I've been running Costco Gas in my ST since I bought it. I never had any problems.

It's next to the coffee stand so its all good.:)

In my area there is a town about 30 miles away that has 3 gas stations that are always about 20 cents cheaper a gallon than anywhere else in the county. I know plenty of people that will specifically drive there to fill up with gas. They probably burn more fuel to get there and back then what they save. I live in a really rural area and have to drive an hour to do any shopping (Walmart, Sears etc) or 2hrs to get to a real city with a mall and most of your normal chain stores and restaraunts. If I know we are going shopping soon I will hold off on filling up since the gas there is normally 20 to 30 cents a gallon cheaper. I will not go out of my way to fill up but will hold off on it if I know I am going somewhere.
 
We have a costco card and there is one on the way to my wifes work. She saves about 8-10 cents a gallon. She doesn't make a specific trip to go there though, she is already there.



I buy gas at the cheapest place I see on my way somewhere, I don't make a specific trip to go get it (GA is 40 miles away and is usually about a quarter cheaper, but I would burn 4 gallons worth ~10.00 to save 5.00 :) Not worth it. BUT, when I know I have enough to get there, I always stop there on my way to VA to see the wife.



.10 a gallon is like 1.60 a fill up, not worth the hassle to me.



Buying 130k gallons of MGO in the morning, .10 a gallon in savings might be worth it, but when you compute mileage in feet per gallon, it's pretty much a mute point. It's not my gas card anyways :) It belongs to my Uncle Sam.

I know prices are pretty high up there in the Seattle area, I spent most of the year last year up there working on the new SeaTac terminal. Smokes were pretty high as well....5 something a pack :wacko:
