DPFE sensor

OK Experts, I have a P0401 code (EGR insuff. flow) on mt 2001. looking at past threads leads me to believe I should change the DPFE sensor. Does this sound right? also what is it, where is it, and can I do it. I work on F-15 avionics, but I don't know what I'm looking at under a hood!!!

It controls the opening and closing of the egr valve. It is a black square sensor located on the driverside valve cover. It has 2 vacuum hoses and an electrical connector. It is easy to remove only 2 screws.



Check to see if the 2 vacuum hoses are stopped up. Aslo I would take loose the pipe that connects to the egr and see if it is clogged. If you have a haynes manual it tells how to test the senesor.

Thanks downsouth, I took a quick look but still have no idea what I'm looking at. I don't even knoe what/where the EGR is!! I see something connected to 2 pipes with an elec. connector, but no screws. Maybe someone has a photo that could point me in the right direction??? I get real nervous poking around under there.

Your sensor will look different than the above picture, but the location is the same.

OK it does look different, but similar. Is it easy to get the sensor off the pipes?? It seems like they're on real tight. I don't want to pay a dealer a lot of $$$$ for something I can hopefully do myself. Thanks for taking the time to help me guys.

The hardest thing is getting the electrical connector off, IMHO. To remove it from the rubber hoses, just grasp it and pull straight up. Avoid any lateral force or you could break off the plastic tubes of the DPFE.

If you're replacing the sensor, why would that be a concern? If you break them, just pull the broken ends out of the hoses and install the new sensor.

Old post but I thought I would clarify this, the DPFE sensor does not control the opening and or closing of the egr valve in any way, shape or form. It's sole purpose in life is to verify that the egr is flowing the correct amount of exhaust through the valve by looking at the pressure differential between the 2 sample hoses.
