I am at the inlaws and they wouldlike to play a dvd on there ancient computer (does have XP though). What FREE program would be good for this? Windows media player doesnt have the right decoder it seems. Any ideas?

I use PowerDVD but it isn't free, but it was free to me as a pack in with all the optical drives I have purchased.

I did a quick Google search...you might try this one which claims to be truly free, non-crippled, and without spyware:

I take it you have acess to the internet. Windows MEdia, the later versions, had a DVD encoder built in it.

If it is an old computer, it probably doesn't have a DVD drive. As far as I know, there isn't a software program that will make a CD-ROM drive play DVDs. Most computers with DVD drives come with the DVD player software installed.

Nelson is right, if the PC is that 'ancient', then most likely it only has a CD-Rom drive, which is useless. No software will get you around a hardware limitation like no DVD drive :)
