I am looking for a free DVD to MPEG or WMV converter.

I have a portable media center and would like to bring some movies with me for my flight to Las Vegas.

Any ideas what works the best?

Tom

I can't recommend a free solution because most all of them require two steps (one to rip, one to convert) and my time is at a premium.

I have been using a product called DVD Ripper Pro from Jesterware, and it does the ripping in one step, directly to the format you desire: MPEG, MPEG4, WMV, Divx, XVid....

For me, it's worth every penny (all 2,999 of them...it's $29.99), and you can try before you buy. The free download version places a watermark in the center of the ripped video. If you choose to buy you do so on their secure site using CC or Paypal.

Oh, and they have versions that rip in one step for PSP too.

See the link at:

tracnutz,

If using XVID or Divx it's a little less than 10MB per minute...which I know sounds like a lot, but it's reasonable. Hour long TV shows less commercials are under 400MB, your average 90 minute movie just over 800MB, and your longer two hour movie around 1.2GB.

Also, it depends on the resolution...the above assumes the same resolution as original DVD. If you downsize the resolution to that of your personal media device (PSP, Zen, iPod, whatever), then those storage sizes go down somewhat.

Chris27, does WinAVI also do the ripping from DVD or do you have to get DVDShrink or something like that and perform a two-step operation to rip a DVD then convert to Divx or the like?

P.S.

Chris27, which WinAVI product are you talking about: WinAVI Video Converter, or WinAVI DVD Copy?

I assume the latter as the former doesn't seem to support DVD ripping?

sup, i havent used this product, but it says its free at this link:

one i have used is this one:

Dvdshrink is also another good one to use, so u can get rid of the stuff u dont want, and then u can burn to ur hard drive of puter. then use those files to select which ones u would like to convert, by using super d.

Ripit4me, is a good one for those dvds that r copyrighted. this deincrypts them and opens the dvd up so dvd shrink can open it up and u get to the point of selecting which files u want to keep in the dvd before burning to hard drive. hope this helps out alil bit

Thanks for the link. It is a pay program with a free download you pay to use.

Thanks anyways...

TJR,

Caymen was looking for a tool that would allow him to convert his DVD's to Mpeg or Xvid.

This tool does everything... It keeps the 5.1 Audio which is nice to have...

I use DVD Decrypter for my DVD burning...

Cheers

DVD Shrink will convert a DVD to an MPEG or WMV?

I want to convert a DVD to an MPEG or WMV for my pocket media device.

Tom

As I recall, when I used to have one of the original Dell Axims', I was able to decrypt the DVD with DVD Decrypter, shrink it down to the required size with DVD Shrink (CF card at that time, now primarily SD), and there was a third program which was shareware/freeware then known as Pocket DVD Studio. It is now for sale. With regard to your original request, the correct answer remains Decrypter and Shrink. To get it onto the memory card to play in a PPC format I'm not sure that there is a free program any longer. Try www.aximsite.com and do a search there for an applicable program. Good luck!

The unit I have has a 20 GB HDD and you can use either an MPEG or WMV to upload into the player.
