I was selling some rims on Ebay when I noticed that somebody had completely changed my auction. The next day I had a brand new auction under my name selling a Camero. I wasn't able to do anything other then cancell the auction because I was already late for a 3 day trip to Rome with the family. When I got home today I found a few emails from Ebay saying my account has been "temporarily restricted" because it was accessed by a third party. My question is has anybody had this happen to them before? If so, how long did it take to clear everything up? How does one access another's account?

I do have to give to ebay though, They caught this problem on thier own, and they are not charging me selling fees for these two acutions.

Thats what confussed me. I dont respond to the ebay emails. I dont even look at them. I am aware of "spoofing", so I dont give information out.

Do you use the same password for your eBay account as you do for other accounts? Perhaps someone along the line got your password, either from you or some other means, and used it for their own means. As soon as the account is active, create a new password, random gibberish works well, with at least two numbers.

DON'T open a new account!

You need to call eBay and they can un-hijack your account. Then, they will cancel all auctions fraudulantly set up. You'll spend about 30 minutes proving you own the hijacked account.

Don't let this go! It's got to be fixed right and abandoning your old account is the wrong way.

I use a hard password theory. No names, no words! Use upper case, lower case, and numbers.

If you previously received an email from ebay asking you to update your account, etc. If you opened the link provided, you may have been logging onto an ebay cloned site. That's probably where they got your UserID, Password and perhaps even your credit card number, etc.

Never used the links provide by the email, they are almost always cloned sites that are set up to get your passwords and access to your account to steal from you or to scam someone else using your name.

If you get any email from ebay or PayPal, think about what they are asking you. They know your name, email address, UserID, Password, credit card numbers, etc...Why do they need to ask you for information they already have?? The answer is , "They don't", but the scammers do.

I had this happen to me last month. The criminal used my account to submit about 20 auctions. I didn't even know about it until e-bay contacted me.

I had to change my password with e-bay and I was given credit for the fraudulent charges immediately. E-Bay will help you through the process. Its' a bit lengthy so be prepared to spend a little time at the computer. Of course, you may have a faster connection than my slow, dial-up server.
