I'm surprised that I haven't seen this come up here yet, so I'll toss it out and see what happens...

Should Michael Irvin be fired by ESPN for his racist comments about Tony Romo? After all, they fired Rush Limbaugh, for comments that he made that, in my opinion, were significantly less racist than those Irvin made.

I don't care for Limbaugh, but if ESPN doesn't can Irvin, then Rush deserves to get his job back with them--or at least the full pay for the remainder of that season...

Thoughts?

Here's one of hundreds of stories about the incident. If you do a search on google or yahoo, you'll find more--including many with audio of the incident.

But long story short, he said that Romo is such a good athlete that there must be some black blood in him. Among other statements in his comments was one that "His great-great-great-great-grandma ran over in the ‘hood or something went down."

If a white announcer had said that, he'd have been fired after the show was over and people across the US would be calling for an apology.

Jeff C--Exactly my point, and the point of thousands of other people. Rush Limbaugh is exhibit #1. Jimmy the Greek is exhibit #2. Not only should Irvin be kicked out--but Jesse Jackson and the NAACP should be the primary parties calling for that to happen.

I want to have a White Pride Parade....no insult intended....Iam sick of double standards..

I agree with the no double standard. If we truely want equality in America then we need to treat all people fairly no matter what your race or orientation.

Also, I'd love to see women to topless in public in this kind of weather ;), but I know that ain't gonna happen. :D

Funny no one brings up the Bryant Gumbel HB) Real Sports comments about the Winter Olympics awhile back.... I really thought that his comments were worse than any of the recent issues...

Was rather disgusted about it......

As for Irvin... I don't think it really meant it the way it came across... It was supposed to be a bit of a joke.

There was also a commentator that got fired about a month ago for talking about something alittle girlish... and he said "WOW that sounded really Gay..." Again that is not that bad in my mind... I have used that term with friends in reference to something really stupid all the time.... But I guess some people just get offended by things easier than others!

The problem, as I see it, and you can all think I am racist, sexist, homophobic and whatever, when I say it, but here goes...

...the problem is political correctness.

If a person talks effeminate, and acts all swishy and someone says "Man, that's gay", then the speaker is homophobic. If Jimmy the Greek or Michael Irvin implies that blacks may be innately better athletes than whites, well, then that's racist. If Michael Richards calls a few blacks behaving badly the N-word, then he is racist, regardless how many blacks use that word on a daily basis. If Bill Cosby is critical of young urban blacks, then again, he is racist.

It USED to be you could call a "spade a spade".

Not anymore.

Yep, double standard all the way.

Bryant Gumble's commentary was shameful, much worse than Irvin's, in my opinion, because it was scripted, not off-the-cuff.

Exactly on the HBO thing... I am surprised HBO didn't do anything about that....

The Scary thing is he truely meant what he said.... That is the worst part about it!

Cheers

Noooo that would be racist. But if you did insist on having it, maybe it would be televised on WET (white entertainment television). You could have a float representing the National Honky College Fund. No wait, that would be racist too. Ok then, maybe just a little get together at the local chapter of the NAAWP. Nope, guess not, racist too.

Double standards make me sick.

I hate politically correct people almost as much as I hate racist. They're all retarded, oops I meant mentally challenged.

Easy guys...... Although it may appear that whites are being disenfranchised because of all the Black funding and groups, I think you are wrong.... These so called groups were started and put in place to right a wrong that was taking place in this country. All the way up until recent times ( 30-40 years) this country was the white mans gravy train in all aspects of life better pay, lower rates, better jobs, more opportunity, better education, better liberty and better Justice and always the recipient of Patronage and occasional breaks one receives in life.

These support groups were to help advance these people to a level playing field and acknowledge the harm that 100's of years of slavery and post slavery has caused.... Sorry to say but it takes more than 30-40 years to undo all this, and it happens to fall on our shift... Just as it is hard for whites to see from a black mans perspective I think it is hard for a black man to see from a white mans perspective

Lets put it this way....

Does anyone here think that being Black in this country

A. Makes life easier

B. Makes life tougher
