To get tie rod end off you have to back the nut off of the tie rod end. So sitting looking at the wheel well the nut that locks the end on needs to go clock wise, then you can unscrew the tie rod end (counter clockwise) then the nut. I left the old nut in place to give me an idea of how far the new tie rod end needed to go on, so the alignment would be somewhat close so I could drive it to an alignment shop.
