My brother-in-law is looking to buy one. He thinks he wants a Dell. Basically, no matter the brand, what should he be looking for or,,,, does he not want????

He has found a 17 inch and a 19 inch he likes. The 19 inch has four USB's on it. I assume this is nothing more than a hub for the USB and serves no other purpose as far as the monitor goes, correct???

The 19 inch reads at 20 Milliseconds. He uses it for work. Placing orders and what not. Every now and then he watches live Hockey via Com Cast while he works.

Any input would be appreciated,

thanks....

I'm using a three year old refurbished Dell 1701FP, 17-inch monitor. I bought it from Tiger Direct. It has an awesome picture and has worked flawlessly. I have a WinTV USB TV card in my systems, and the video looks better than a normal television.

For work and e-mail uses, you don't need a fast monitor. Those are only useful for high-end gaming.

gateway has a new 21" that rocks. hd resolution, 5 input for any type of video, you can rotate the display and use it in portrait mode, $599

I have a Dell 20.1" and love it. The USB on the monitor is indeed just a hub. If his computer at work does not have a DVI output, you can save a little on the price of the display.

I think the 19" monitor your brother-in-law is looking at is the Dell Ultra Sharp 1905fp. I have this same monitor and it is great. It has analog and DVI connectors, height adjustable stand, it can be rotated to landscape or portrait mode, and like you mentioned it does have the built in 4 port hub (which I don't even use).

I would definitely recommend this monitor.

I have not gone wrong with samsungs. I have a 17 with 8ms response time. That response time and refresh rate are important for gaming and such.

Beware of the warranty on FP's, some will say 3 year warranty, but only 1 year on the backlight. The Samsungs I've bought offer 3 years on both. If you have no backlight, the monitor is dark, you won't be able to use it. Check the warranty before you buy, also for the dead pixel replacement. I've bought 4 samsung with no dead pixels, but I think they require at least 3 on the monitor before they will replace it. I've seen as many as 8.

Oh, and make sure he buys it from a store that has it hooked up to a PC, not some BS Demo video. Have him take a look at it in action before buying. A good computer store will do this.

I would also suggest the Dell 1905fp. Make sure to take advantage of the DVI connection if the computer supports it. Always good deals on these at the Dell website. I personally have an AOpen 19" I purchased from Newegg.com. It is DVI, the picture is incredible and appears huge. Paid $300.00 with like a $70.00 mail in rebate. Mail in is a pain in the ass but I did eventually get my money so I got a great monitor for like $230.00. Here is a website that you should take a look at at least once a day. All the best internet bargains are posted on this site and it updates constantly. Dell online coupons are frequently posted for all Dell monitors. I have purchased many items after discovering the deals on this site, some of them have been unbelievable deals.
