So my mechanic said that my front seal is leaking. He said it was 9 hours to replace as you have to replace the timing cover.

My question is can I just pull the crankshaft pulley and change the seal that way??

Is it really a 9 hour job??

any info is appreciated,

The timing cover most likely has to come off to get to the seal. I was told the same by my mechanic about my wife's Taurus and I'm in the process of getting up enough money to get it done in a few weeks. He said the entire front engine dress has to come off and it's automatic to put on a new water pump while it's apart. On her car I don't know about the crank seal, although lately I can smell oil burning too, but it's been leaking antifreeze for several months.

Remove the timing cover to change the front crank seal...that's a new one on me, I guess I am magicial...I usually do them with the timing cover on the vehicle

You will need a harmonic balancer puller adn installer, a seal puller and a seal installer(this can be anything that enables you to pound the seal in evenly...aka large deep socket). Obviously you have to pull the drive belt off and I remove the fan also.
