Our freshman dorm fun was taking the bigger caps and putting them in the 110v wall receptables (usually with a pair of pliers, sometimes with a bare hand), then standing back and counting down to the BANG....

That and going to the wiring closet (phone) and listening to guys talk to their girlfriends at home sometimes recording them when they were being p-whipped.

Every freshman electronics class seemed to have the one person who figured out that you could charge a capacitor and then toss it to classmates. Probably the same one who drags their feet on the carpet in winter to shock people.

Did it have a rough shipping experience? I have had amps get bounced around snap off a corner of a PCB.

Can you take the cover off and see which component smoked?

It's getting a little off-course from the original question of the thread, but if you can say precisely what the problem is to the seller, maybe they can make it right. If you just tell them that it didn't work, then they will immediately think you didn't hook it up right.

Oh, and BTW, the longer you have installed this kind of equipment, the more likely you are to hook something up wrong because you tend to take things for granted (like instructions).

John most pwr amps have reverse polarity protection in the form of sacrificial diodes shunted to ground.

Using incorrect loads or shorting loads will damage audio output IC's/power transistors.
