Follow up questions for those of you recommending monoprice.com...

I'm needing some in-ceiling speakers. Monoprice has their own, at a quite reasonable price. Any of you ever purchased them? What do you think of the quality? We're not audiophiles, so even basic speakers will likely be fine for us--in fact, as long as they have basic functionality, visual appearance is probably as important as accoustic capabilities.

I'm also in need of a receiver--the one I had been expecting to get from my brother when he was remodeling now won't be happening. Any recommendations for sites for that kind of purchase, along the lines of the monoprice recommendations for the cables?

Thanks again to everyone!!!! You've been so helpful, I'll even breakdown and give you all one of those oversized emoticons!!! :smile0006:

Bill- Your current TV setup is using HDMI for video only. (Toslink not necessary)

That is, if your Blu-Ray player and Tivo are connected directly into the A/V Receiver, via HDMI.

It will stream discrete multi channel audio without the Toslink from the TV.

Pretty cool, you're receiving ATSC broadcast HDTV over the air, in 5.1 Surround. (Rabbit Ears are back) LOL

Bill, thanks for your help, on all your other posts. Great site and people here.

Your TIVO - HDMI - TV - TosLink - A/V Receiver will only get you HD audio from over the air signals.

If you do get the Blu Ray player, the TV will not pass the HD audio. You will need to run all items (with HDMI) into the A/V receiver - HDMI - TV.

Can you follow what I am saying? Its easy to understand if you follow the logic, but not so easy if you don't know the "terminology".

If you go with Monster cables, be sure the weight of them is supported. I have seen several HDMI jacks and associated boards that were damaged by Monster cables. They are overkill IMO, and the extra bulk can be bad for the thin solder connections and pathways on the input board.

Ditto!!

Allow me to clarify--

Yes, the BlueRay/DVD is running via HDMI (both audio and video) into the receiver. And the receiver is then running video to the TV via HDMI. However, I do still want the Toslink, as when I'm watching OTA television using the TV's tuner, I'm wanting to hear the audio from that from the speakers--so I need the Toslink to run the audio from the TV to the receiver.

Make sense?

Bill- Your set up sounds correct. The optical cable is necessary from your panel to receiver, without a tuner box, to get digital surround, using the ATSC tuner. (No Cable or Sat)

Be careful not to put sharp bends in the optical cable. (The "Tos" was derived from Toshiba)

As mentioned above, tie wrap everything, after you are dialed in. Congrats, I wish all customers were as capable and willing. Good job. Enjoy !!!
