Right now , here in Pa , it is difficult for the deer to find food. I have always fed them in winter and do not hunt in the 33 acres behind my house. I do my hunting on farms that have problems with crop damage. Thought you might like to see a couple of pictures.

These were taken last nite but I guess I forgot to reset the date on my Stealth trail cam.

That is cool. And I am fine with hunting in general, but I am pleased to hear that you do not feed them to suck them in...

Wonder how many you have had there at one time...

Their were nine there one nite but that is the most i have seen. 5 of those seem to be regulars.

PS All five made it thru hunting season.

I don't understand why you're sheltering them???

Deer are an invasive species, and now that we've displaced their predators, we have to keep them in line.

If the deer can't survive during the winter on their own, then they shouldn't :(

Hunting on places with crop damage is nice and all, but not when you're harboring the same vandalizing animals in your backyard--sounds hypocritical to me.

:smile0005:

I dont see a darn thing wrong with what you are doing, drpertz. Infact I find compassion quite commendable. It has been a harsh winter this year and it is entirely possible that many species have have had an above average mortality rate.

KL would probably be under the porch clutching his M240 w/ night vision scope waiting for juuuuuuust the right moment :smile0015: Just kidding bud.

To add to what Shaun said, you are also helping to make sure there are still deer for future hunters! :smile0006:

I can't understand why anyone would call Deer an invasive species. Obviously someone is unaware that WE are encroaching on THEIR environment. They were here before we were.

I guess they're nice pics and all, but I see so many deer that I'm desensitized.

I spend a lot of time hiking. Last Tuesday I had to hoof it off a trail to take care of business, and I ended up flushing 6 deer in the process of simply walking a few hundred yards.

In a MD state park, you have no excuse for starving. These things are everywhere. Those pics that Bill Barber posts with wild turkeys parading down the street...it's like that, only with deer.

Bow Hunters need to up their game.

Deer = Accidents, lyme disease, deer ticks alone, destroyed crops, drunk dudes falling out of deer stands and/or lame neighbors who cry and moan about killing bambi.

:smile0003:

I encounter many a "hiker" a few feet in from a parking area, ogling a deer, and they get perturbed when I hike past and interrupt their "commune with nature". I tell them to go 50 feet, and they'll find another. They will.

(These are the same people btw who see a Heron, or hear a hawk, and claim that it is a Bald Eagle, or build shrines to Gaia in the woods. Seriously)

During season, the deer have learned to hold out in the areas of parks that are No Hunting :(

There is no shortage of deer, we don't need to preserve them, and seeing a deer is not a rare event.

So confused here.

:smile0005:

End rant.

And we see so few that we have a different opinion. It is nice to wake up and glance out the window and see them in their environment. They dont bother us at all...

I'm fairly certain PA is overpopulated with deer. I like seeing them (as long as they're not on the front end of the Trac), but I think the idea of a "starving" deer is part of natural selection.

just don't feed them, are three times more wight and blacktail deer in america today, than when when Columbus landed.

they are vermin in my hood, no better than roof rats.

I hear and understand the argument from both sides.

Yes, they can destroy crops and what not, yes, they do create lots of damage to our auto's when we run into them, ect ect...

That said, in most cases, it is us humans that have "crowded" them out of their normal and natural environment. It really is no different than how the American Indian was pushed from their land. The difference was, they could fight back and did so up to the point we eventually slaughtered them too.

I guess the deer are fighting back in there own way. Thus the damage to our autos and crops as we have forced them to areas they would not normally be in...

I occasionally get deer (and sometimes raccoons) in my back yard in Pebble Beach.

Here is a picture of one. Since this picture was taken, I have removed the fence in the background which opens the yard up to the green belt behind the property.

More importantly, the areas that they're in now, whether they be natural or not for deer, lack predators, because while everyone thinks Bambi is cute and protects him, no one protected the wolves and other predators. So it is our duty to eat venison. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

The deer fighting back is far worse than the indians fighting back, as the deer kamikaze into cars, making them no better than Al Quaeda(sp).

(That's a joke, btw)

I'd forgotten about that statistic, thanks.

Are there less "American Indians" now than there were then? That could be an interesting statistic.

KL.

Though I do not know the numbers, I am certain there are less American Indians then there were back then.

By that, I mean in the traditional sense. I am part Indian, my Great Great Great Grandfather was a Chief of five tribes. He is what I would consider to be a true Indian. I am probably more American than I am Indian. And by the percentages, I am 1/5th Indian. I would say he was 5/5th or 1 whole and true Indian.

There is probably more people that are part Indian than there were full blooded Indians simply due to the population growth. But the blood gets thinner and thinner every generation..

Not that you asked for a history lesson, but here is my Grandfathers info.

Oghema Niagara (aka) Chief Thunderwater. (10 Sept. 1865-10 June 1950).

This is one of only a few color photo's of him.

Here is the replacement stone we put on his grave about 15 years ago.

[Broken External Image]:

He is buried in Erie View Cemetery along with another Indian. The cemetery is protected grounds sitting in the middle of Cleveland directly across from Jacobs field where the Cleveland Indians play. MANY people have tried to buy the lot with the desire to turn it into a parking garage...
