So...why do HID lights need ballasts? From an electrical standpoint, I can understand why, but they're just tubes of inert gas, so why don't they just have HV run through them?

Inert gas lights up instantly with proper HV, no need for all this ballast crap which wastes electricity...seems to me like using an AC inverter in your Trac to power an ultimately DC powered product, like using an inverter to turn yo' DC to AC just to have the laptop turn it back to DC, at large electrical costs.

To demonstrate, put a small fluorescent tube in contact with an old-school CRT tv screen, with the TV off. Turn the TV on--the spike of HV will cause the tube to flash on. If you want a bigger flash, put some tin foil on the tv, let it charge, and touch it to that..but be wary of the shock.

Alternatively, if you have one of those glass bulbs filled with neon/argon that are led size (I need some more), you can hold them up to the tv and they'll glow all day. And, hooking some tubes to a neon sign transformers lights them right up...though again be wary of shock, no one wants to ride the lightning.

Anyhow, I always thought HID did run on HV, but after looking into them a bit after perusing mjs3350's thread, I don't think they really do, which leaves me

Also, why are all the HID bulbs either pumping out blue or purple light?

I just want white light, but it seems that only the 6000k kits deliver that, but do they put out the same amount of light as their more costly 8k & 10k kits?

(So do you pay more just for color, cause I find that hard to believe...would you believe?... ;) )

If I purchased a kit, what would be best to mount them in, because I don't want to gut my normal headlights, but all these kits just give bulbs sans housing, as if they expect you to only do "operation transplant"?

To be honest, I don't even know how ballasts/ignitors work, I just know they're needed.

4700K (sometimes called 5000K) produces the white light found on all OEM vehicles. It's very white, and provides the highest amount of light output. As you increase temp, color turns from blu to purple to green, but light output also drops drastically. People who get the higher temp lights are doing it purely because they want the look, and I'd bet most don't realize that they're light output is way worse than 4700K.

Please don't get a kit, it's blinding to other drivers. Check out this picture for what HID should look like, ad what kits look like.

Here are some more pics for reference. The first pic is above the cutoff line, what drivers will see with OEM quality projectors. The second is below the cutoff line, or what all other drivers see when a HID kit is used, without a projector.

So what are you recommending that we get? I would like to replacemy stock lights and want something "hyper white"ish, not the blue, cant stand it. Are you saying to get what is on the above truck or not to get it? Im so confused......

So, sadly, there's no way to get HID without having to gut your normal headlight bulbs and put in HID bulbs? I guess I could live with that.

So there really is no aftermarket light that you can buy that mounts on a brush guard or whatnot which contains a projector and all that other good stuff so that you don't be the inconsiderate towards your fellow drivers...I know your point all too well about the HID morons; the trac is above those typical civic drivers..gotta have class ;)

Tangenting, what bulbs do the vaunted hella lights and all those "high end" aftermarket lights use?
