Kimo, Can you hear the A/C compressor cycling? You also need to turn the fan on. Mine won't shut off unless the A/C selector is set to off! If the A/C is turned on, and the compressor is not cycling, there is a leak and you have run our of freon. I have had better luck with A/C specialists than auto mechanics. I just had my condenser replaced. ($360.) Shop around for prices. Amazon 104. shipped, Car Quest 275 + shipping.
 
the system defaults to heat when there is an air blend door issue, check your vacuum lines, especially on the passenger side on the engine by the spark plugs...
 
Thought that's what it was at first Les but when I kicked her out, it not only stayed hot in the cab but it got awfully chilly in the bedroom. :grin:



Will have to check on the vacuum lines.

If it is a vacuum line, then the vent should default to the defroster...



That said, it could be a defective door (as well as a vacuum or stuck) for the heater core and you are getting residual heat.
