You should try to reinstall Windows again. You may also want to check the battery on your laptop. A loss of power should not occur on a laptop, unless you let the battery run out.

If NOTHING is listed in Device Manager, than yes, Fmarano, that is bad...possibly a corrupt install of Windows; maybe as a result of losing power during the SP2 installation.

If it were me, and you can get away with it, I would reinstall the base OS with your recovery CDs that came with the computer, or better yet, and OEM copy of XP Professional with SP 2.

Either way, I would try a fresh install/recovery first. If yo ugo the OEM CD route (rather than the recovery with the CDs that came with the laptop), than once up and running you will have to go to Gateway's website, their support area, and download and install all the appropriate drivers for that model laptop (they should have several, including audio drivers). If you go the recovery route those drivers should already be there since Gateway should have bundled them, but regardless, you can reinstall the latest from Gateway's website as described just to be sure you have the latest.

I hope this helps....

P.S. I just saw that you said you don't have any software on disk to reinstall...I suggest you get an OEM copy of XP Prof w/ SP2 then.

Never install software on a laptop unless the power adaptor/charger is plugged into the wall".

Yeah it was plugged in.....it doesnt help that the battery was low and the power went out in my apartment..... It was a freak situation.....kind of funny actually.....lol I admit, I laughed...lol

The problem with your computer is the fact that it is a gateway. I have two friends that also have gateway laptops and they have had nothing but problems.

I have a Sony Viao and it is a great computer.

I have a gateway desktop that is about 7 years old (400c) and is still strokin... had to do a reload of win98 once and finally installed XP to get wireless working. Granted, all it is used for is MP3's and surfing the www, but it still does great.

I am of the belief that all manufacturers have their junk, and their gems.

I had a client who had a Sony laptop, and the dang thing would just shutdown without warning. Turned out that it was a known issue with a certain series of Sony laptops where it would think it was overheating and would shut down.

In any case, I'd totally reload the operating system.

I have owned 5-6 Gateways that have been great. It isn't the fact it is a Gateway, it is the fact it got shut down when I was installing SP2.....maybe re-reading my first post would help you. I could find you a million examples of Sony stuff breaking......and I still buy Sony items because in fact I have had good luck........

If anything, my problem would be with microsoft and windows but it isnt. The laptop lost power, it worked fine before the outage and it still does. .....it just doesnt have sound.

Just looking for the obvious...

My Dell has an actual volume knob on the side. Every time I plugged in a set of headphones, my finger brushed the knob and turned the sound down a little. Soon I had everything turned up and no sound. When I found the knob I was very surprised. Do you know if you have the same thing?

TJR, I know I do not know much about computers, but... the computer is running fine. It starts and my wireless internet works fine, IE works great and so do my messangers. The sound is the only thing missing that I use.

And yes my device manager is blank....zip, nothing on the one side in the category I was told to go to.......
