Greetings all.

I first posted here a week or two ago asking for everyone's opinion on the ST and inquiring as to the over-all satisfaction level or problems with the vehicle. I appreciate all the responses I received and have been impressed with the large base of knowledge you guys possess collectively. I've also enjoyed some of the off-topic debates that have sprung up in here from time to time.

I'm still in Afghanistan, but my days here are quickly winding down. I should be out of here, heading back to my beautiful wife, Manuela, in Italy sometime next week. My first order of business, after getting "reacquainted" with her, is to place my order for an '05.

I had originally planned to get a used ST from a stateside dealer, like CarMax, when we relocate to Ft. Rucker, Alabama this fall, but decided that I should be able to get a good deal on an '05 as the model year comes to an end and the dealers start making room for the '06/'07 model. I'd like to be able to wait to get an ST with a V8, but don't have the luxury of time to wait that long. Besides, I dig the current body-style and like the idea of getting a full warranty in case I have to deal with some of the problems the rest of you have experienced.

The Military Car sales office we have on my base in Italy is able to sell vehicles directly from the manufacturers and free of sales-tax or dealer-prep rip-offs . I won't even have to worry about the annoying dealer badges messing up my paint b/c it will never have one. Likewise, I should be able to get a $2,000 rebate on a ST.

With this in mind, what would the rest of you say would be a reasonable price for a 4x4 XLT Premium on the Ford Family Plan? I'm going to opt for either the dark stone or silver birch paint with the bed-extender, bed-cover, side impact air-bags, and MAYBE the expensive audio package or moon-roof. I'm figuring I should be able to get the final price down to about $25,000 ($26,000?). That will leave me with enough saved-up "war money" to splurge on the EE sway bar, some high-quality shocks, and low-restriction air filter. I might even go all out and get some nice rims and rubber. Those faux hood-scoops look bodacious also. I've got lots of ideas from the rest of ya'll and hope to be able to post some pics of my new ride by the end of the year. In the mean time, thanks for the help and feel free to offer opinions or advice a new future owner might benefit from.

Thanks for the support!

Davy

Get in touch with MilCarSales and find out the final date for putting in special orders since September is almost here. For now, the most important note would be STAY SAFE ALWAYS and thanks to you and your family for the sacrifices you are enduring so that we here in the good ol' USA can have the freedom we enjoy. Are you aware that on this site, Silver Birch were dubbed as car magnets?j/k:lol:

You can get a detailed quote from Ford on your vehicle at this website (see link). A quick figure I got was just a few dollars over $23K. You don't have to wait until you return to Italy. You can call AAFES on DSN at your base and place the order. You can also order from http://www.encs.com/, which is the AAFES New Car Sales website.

I provide this info so you can properly prioritize things. The ST should come first, before getting reacquainted with Manuela. Remember: God, country, truck, wife, sports, drinking buddies (in that order)

I am happy to hear when my fellow GIs are coming home. Thanks for all you do. :D

Welcome home, Davy. As Jim said, I also remember that wonderful feeling of being SHORT!

Do you guys still use the term "two digit midget", for when you pass under 100 days left to go? :D

As a fellow combat vet, I do understand the being *Shhhooorrrt* the best day was when I counted from X number of days and a wakeup to just the wakeup. after being overseas for 5 years, going back to the world of round door knobs and 24 hour convienance was a bit of a culture shock.

Rock on

Bob

DeadlyDavy,

First off, thank you and all of your fellow service persons (to be P.C.) in all

branches of the service for your outstanding jobs to give us our freedoms!!!

You will love your 'trac. Many good and knowledgeable members here to help

you through any projects or problems that you may have.

Aw, Hell!!! I'll say it!...Get "acquainted' with your wife, order the 'trac, and then

get "re-acquainted" with the both of them! The 'trac DOES have a back seat,

and also a BED! If any ladies are reading this post, forgive me, please. Just a

guy talking to another guy...To put it another way:

One Guy...

One Girl...

One 'Trac...=

A perfect threesome!!!

Davy--Get home safe and soon! And thanks for the time you've spent over there!

Although regarding you being short--I'm still not sure what the fact that you're vertically challenged has to do with the message... :D

Hey Davy the stories about not paying taxes are partial truths. You won't have to pay taxes on the vehicle if you drive it in country for 6 months or more. Anything less or if you take delivery in the states you will have to pay taxes. Trust me, they got me when we PCS'ed from Italy last year and I took delivery stateside. That bonehead move cost me $2700 (man I hate California):D

Good luck and STay Safe

Thanks all.

RegalOne: did the silver birches get dubbed car magnets due to the number of them involved in wrecks? I have seen a few pics of wrecked silver STs. I just dig silver b/c it looks nice and doesn't show dirt too badly. I'll probably opt for the dark stone.

NelsonOKC: I'll check out the link. Thanks.

Eric P: Never heard of the "double digit midget", but I'll do my best to bring it back into our slang. I think it sounds pretty funny.

Robert Poole: I've definitely enjoyed my time in Europe. Italy is a beautiful country and people. I've loved every moment of it. I will enjoy being able to go out a 2a.m. and get a waffle at the Waffle House if I need to, though. Can't say I'm looking forward to all the commercialism and obesity though. I think my wife is in for a real culture shock, same as what I experienced when I first moved to Italy. she's visited with me before, but she hasn't really experienced life in the US. It's gonna be an adventure for sure.

tracnblack: 10-4 on the plan. The first thing the wife asked when I told her about the ST was, "Is it one of the ones with the back-seat?". All systems are go.......now I just need to get the ST.

Bill V: "short" is an Army term meaning that you don't have much time left with a certain unit or before you move on to the next assignment. As it stands, I have about 5 or 6 days left in Afghanistan before I head back to Italy to take some vacation and then get ready to move to Alabama.

Big$ed32: Where did you work in Italy while you were over there? Did you get your ride through the car exchange in Vicenza, Aviano, or Naples? I'll be sure to inquire with our exchange in vicenza when I get back. I haven't ever heard of anyone getting stuck with the taxes, but then again, mostpeople i know have had there rides delivered to Italy and keep them there for a while. I'll be sure to check it out.

Thanks everyone. I'll keep checking in here until I leave. Thanks for the advice and insight.
