"I am proud to be an AMERICAN where at least I know I'm free, and I won't forget the men who died who gave that right to me. I'll gladly stand up, next to you, and defend her still today. Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land God bless the USA!"

I think Lee Greenwood knows what an American is and clearly it is someone living proud, strong, and grateful in the USA.

While in Europe, people would ask me where I am from. I would say, the USA. Thier response was always, "Oh America".

Nelson,

I tried that once. I took them out after a short time - they cut down too much of the sound for my taste. But it is smarter than the way I always did (and still do) it.

Oh well.

TJ,

Yep, take your cue from a country western star. Sounds good to me.

Caymen, Bill V, et al:

Just because we usurped that phrase doesn't diminish the fact that everyone living in the Americans is an American. Personally, I have always preferred what the Brits called (still call?) and ourselves once called our citizens...

Yanks!

Rocco,

I completely agree, all those living in N. AQmerica are American, really N American. That is besides the fact. The world refers to us as Americans. That pretty much sums it up.

For those that live in the south, they would be prefered not to be called Yanks.

What do Limeys know anyways?

Tom

Limeys, that would be the former me, know that in most of the world, the Americas are actually considered TWO continents - hence North and South America. And in England, the term American means from the US of America. There is no other country I'm aware of that uses America in it's name. We call 'em Mexicans, Bolivians, Peruvians, etc, etc.

My spousal unit, another Limey, refers to me as an American since I took my oath of citizenship. Maybe I should refer to myself now as Anglo-American. It is in the dictionary after all. No, I don't think so. American does it for me.

grump :)

See the thread below for links to Theodore Roosevelt's fascinating speeches on "True Americanism" and hypenated-Americans. I think they're still very relevant today.

Hey Bill, I would say no. Because the actual group of islands is called just Samoa and is an independent country. The American Samoan islands (6 of 'em) are actually a territory of the United States. Which is why they are called what they are called. That indicates our government, when they named the territory, considered us (United Statesians) as Americans and included it in the territorial name.

Tom,

If it was "Yankee" I would understand the southern objection. But there's a difference between a Yank and a Yankee.

At least to me. Maybe not to everyone?

Or maybe I'm just wacky on this one.

;)

Rocco,

sorry so slow. Have not checked in with this specific post lately..

As I understand it, being told from a supervisor from the TSA. It was a "Memo" not a "policy".

The difference. It gave the supes the ability to have the freedom to use their judgment.

Kind of sounds like a political umbrella to me. But.... I live with those every day.

Since the article and various media making it so public I am being told via the TSA that they are not to stop infants and toddlers boarding if the parent has good documentation of themselves and will state that the child is theirs or shows some form of guardianship.

Bottom line, I don't think a single thing has changed since it has all come out. I think it is being handled differently in the eyes of the public is all.

Since 1970 the vast majority of terrorist actons have been perpetrated by Arab men between the ages of 19 and 40. All 9/11 hijackers fit that description.

Since 1970 not one terrorist incident on record has been committed by little old ladies, babies, wheelchair users or guys from Tennessee.

Sounds like a good starting point to me, we can tweak it from there.

Regarding the TSA - "You can't professionalize, until you Federalize" - Former Senator Tom Daschle

NO WONDER HE LOST! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
