I have tried several projects on my trac, thanks to the help of projects submitted by other owners. The latest one is new shocks. A simple project. I did appreciate the help from everyone after I posted my last whiny little rant about not getting all the necessary parts with my shocks. After some careful thought and consideration regarding the time it should take me to complete these other member's projects, I have narrowed the possible conclusions down to these:

1. I take an hour to complete a 20 minute project because, though I hate to admit it, I may just be more technologically retarded than I previously thought.

2. A project that takes only "20 minutes" was done by a fellow guy who, like myself has very little concept of time, at least as the rest of the world knows time.

3. The combination of me being a guy and having no sense of time makes my 20 min project only seems like an hour to my wonderful wife who keeps yelling for me to come to dinner.

Maybe there is another more logical conclusion. What do you all think?

You are not alone, schmidty! Outside of changing oil, installing my new shocks was the first time I crawled under a truck to do any kind of work. It was a major project for me and having the right tools and data I learned here cut the work to about three hours! I got stumped while trying to remove the shock bolted next to the evaporator box(?).

I think it is number 1.

I may not have the best mechanical ability, but there isn't much on a car I won't do. If it is broken, needs replaced, or installed I can do it.

Theory of Mechanics:

If it went together, it has to come apart;

If it came apart, it has to go back together.

Theory of Time:

Sitting in the mall, holding your wife's shopping bags from a previos purchase:

Seems-like time; 4 hours / Actual time; 30 seconds...

Theory of Time # 2:

Working on a really cool project for the Trac:

Seems-like time; 30 minutes / Actual time; 4 hours.

schmidty, you have your conclusions correct!!! :D

I simply do it once the right way ( my way!) or don't do it at all...:) No matter how long it takes..

I agree schmidty. I count the prep and cleanup time with the actual project. Others may just be counting wrench-turning time.

The hitch install, lift...not needed. You just need some buddies to lift the bumper, air tools...got 'em, racheting torque wrench...got that too.

A cold beer in the fridge waiting on me when I am finished speeds everything up too.

It's just you!

:)

Could be a combination of the three.... me, I am not the most technical, but I will try just about anything if I can save money. I do draw the line on rebuilding a tranny or an engine though. If I can't afford to throw the item away, I have to really think hard about taking it apart.

Bought a riding lawn tractor for 50.00 once, blew the tranny plowing snow with it. Tackled that tranny though, it took a 10.00 part to fix, I just had to reassemble it 5 times to get the parts in the right place so it would shift. :) THAT was a major accomplishment for me, but that's about the extent of my mechanical ability.

cruzrtwdgt - I thought I am about at the same level as you. I will try anything once, especially if it saves me money.
