as you have probably heard by now, a long isle man took his kids to work with him.

he is an air traffic controller at jfk airport.

the 2 kids directed airport traffic in a couple of exchanges btwn the pilots and tower.

imo, not only should the controller, supervisor be terminated immediately is that a few of the pilots that were in discussion with the kids, were fully aware they were communicating with children.

the faa called it "a lapse in judgement".

how about a MAJOR lapse in common sense.

based on the tape being played over and over and over, the kids did have adult supervision, had apparently been "coached" on the terminolgy to use with the pilots, AND NOTHING BAD happened. Yes, it could have, BUT IT DIDN'T. Should the kids have been allowed to do that, no, but how many other people in this world have had mental lapses, and nothing bad happened. Get over it. JMO.

To me it is the same when the super her on the construction site lets his kids sit on their laps and run the machines......

If they are supervised I am comfortable with it for a second or 2....

When I was 8 years old, my dad, a railroad signal maintainer, talked an engineer buddy of his into letting me operate a locomotive. I basically knew what all the levers and switches did and my knowledge surprised the engineer. I needed a little help releasing the brakes, but other than that, I drove the train for about five miles.

So a child repeated what his/her father said. Supervised by the parent (a trained controller), the parent's supervisor, and probably at least a dozen other people in the tower and control room watching the same things....

Yeah, I'm worried... :haveabeer:

I can't believe this is even news.

:btddhorse:

Must be a slow news week if that's all they got to blow all out of proportion. News today is so crazy, they get a hold of something and won't let it go. If anything the controllers should get a slap on the hand. Yes, it could of been bad, but it wasn't. How many of you let your kids sit on your lap and drive the car? operate power tools? (with close supervision!)

I do understand where the officials are coming from, but,,,, It was innocent, was fully supervised, and no issues came of it. And, if there were issues, the proper people were RIGHT there to step in..

what happend if the kid didn't give the coached instructions. yea, it could have been corrected, but it also could have been overlooked.

also another concern is the flight crew knew a child was giving them instructions.

not good all-round.

you might not think it is a big deal , but if you had a decent understanding of aircraft activity, this is a very BAD decision for ALL involved.

coastie, do not take this the wrong way, but from what i believe is your occupation, i would think that you would find this very disturbing.

Gary, from the "Official" side of things, I am with you 100%.

It was fortunate that all did turn out well. That said, rather than make it bigger than it needs to be, handle it, learn, and continue on.

I will agree that it is not a place that kids should be. I do feel for all involved though as there was no harm meant.

Real professionals know this whole thing has been way blown out of portion. Coastie is right and if anything this was a poor lapse in judgment while trying to lighten up someone's day. You can hear it in the voice transitions between the pilot and the youth.

i hope all involved have a nice trip to the unemployment office. :driving:

tom,

in a post below, this comment is a total contradiction of how you say we all should behave :banghead:

I don't see any problem with it at all. So the kids got to check out what their dad does for a living. Like the parent said on the radio... "It's the next generation of ATC's taking over." I too think it was a slow week for news.

Why is Caymen / Tom allowed to spew his hatred on this forum without consequence???
