2009 4.0L

Reading lots about intake situations on the Explorer forums, and I'm fairly certain the FIPK K&N intake kit for the 2004 4.6L (Part # 57-2564) will work on our 4th Gen 4.0 engines. Can anyone here confirm this? Anyone else have this intake setup and can give me a little piece of mind?

My only question, really, is if the MAF sensor from my 4.0 will fit directly into the port on the K&N kit. Everything else looks like a straight swap.

To answer my own question, and for anyone who may be interested in reading this thread in the future, the answer is yes.

No modifications are required. You'll need a small drill bit to tap new holes for the heat shield. And you'll need to run by the hardware store and pick up any short and fat sheet metal screws to hold it in place. But otherwise it's a direct fit.

Dadattack do you know if this will work on the 4.6l v8 engine in the 4th gen sport tracks?
I just bought a 2007 limited with 177000km. Needs a manifold and a new muffler so I thought I might as well put on a performance muffler and add in a K&N air filter. Thanks

I'm not 100% sure on the v8s, but as long as you have the intake manifold coming off the left side, and not across the top of the motor, I'm going to say yes.

As a matter of fact, I'm about to sell this kit if you're interested. It's got just under 3,000 miles on it. Clean and ready to mingle.
 
Cosplay..., not to take away from Daddattack, but I'd suggest looking for a V-8 specific source. I'm SURE that there's a V-8 specific source out there for the CAI. BUT, because it worked on a V-6, does NOT mean that that same system will work on a V8.

I'll look for a CAI for the V-8, as well you could. But because there's one that worked on a V-6, the motors and under-hood are so different, I would NOT suggest thinking that they'd work the same. :)
 
03 4.0, black tube K&N fipk intake. Tried cleaning it and using less oil on the filter, still messed with it. Cleaned the maf pretty often too.
 
That's odd. I just drove from Georgia to Oklahoma and back and it was all bone dry. What kind of breather tube are you running? Maybe it was pulling crankcase residue and not filter oil?
 
These won't work on the 2007 4.6Ls. They're designed for the vehicles that have the throttle body on the left side, near the rear of the engine bay.

Thanks for all the responses. Funds dictate that the FIPK will have to be a later on down the road deal.
I thought I read someone here mention that the 07 v8’s stock pipe is not bad so I put in a drop in K&N filter for now.
I have no frame of reference as to how the truck performs comparing the stock paper filter for the k&n as I only drove the truck for a few days with the paper filter.
 
I have the K&N flat panel on my '04 Trac. I blocked the inlet behind the headlight.
Cut a hole in the inner fender and the fender side of the box.
I have a 3" ID flex hose from the box down to a homemade scoop. Mounted in the lower grill area.
When I'm moving, it drops the inlet air about 20 degrees below ambient. According to my scan gauge.
 
The stock intake systems on these trucks is pretty ingenious, directly drawing fresh air from the grille and not from a side panel. There's nothing really wrong with them. I just like simple designs and cleaner lines. Those random duct pieces and the corrugated rubber framework of the intake tube look silly to me.

After dozens of hours of testing, through various temps, weather conditions, and altitudes, I can tell you that the FIPK system doesn't just pull in warm air. When you're sitting in traffic in the intake temps skyrocket with this K&N kit, peaking around 170 degrees. But as soon as you're moving, say above 35MPH, the temps settle out and consistently pull in the same air temps as the ambient air, which is the best a cold air system can do. So, I think the discussions I've seen before about "only pulling in hot air" are pretty flatly debunked. Once the air under the hood is moving, there's no difference between these warm air intakes and a more sophisticated cold air intake.
 
When I compared intake air temps from my obd reader for the Fipk and stock, I consistently saw 20-40 degrees hotter than the stock one.
 
You have to get the intake air, to pull somewhere other than under the hood. The Conical FIPK pulls under the hood hot air. One reason is the fan pitches the air to that corner.
That is why I took mine off. I will re-quote what did work me the best. Proove me wrong. Not all Professional CIA's work. Also wrap your pipe between the filter box and TB with insulation. I cut up a windshield shade.
