For those of you who have (aftermarket) fold-up lcd screens that cover the AC vents on gen1 Tracs, I just wanted to ask how your screens were holding up. Has excessive heat or cold blasting behind the screen affected your screens at all?

Thanks.

I had a mobile PC in my taurus for 3 years with a lilliput touch screen lcd monitor in dash, in upstate NY. It was subject to extreme temps all the time, and never let me down. When it's really cold it seemed a bit laggy until it warmed up, but nothing too bad. Sure it's not quite as hot as other places in the country in CNY, but it can easily hit 130 inside a car in the sun, and winters are pretty cold.

Long story short, I wouldn't worry about it.

Sorry for the crummy pic

I would think along the same lines as mjs. Factory and aftermarket DVD / NAV screens seem to do OK with extreme summer & winter temps, so I'd say temp doesn't pose a problem.

With that said though, if the screen plastic bezel is exposed to direct sun for long periods of time, I think they would be subject to deforming / melting.

Have had my fold up screen now for about 2 years, I think. But I have the center vents turned off. I mean if the screen is up, and blocking the air, why have them on anyway? But other than that, no problems.

One of the reasons why I avoided the flip out kind...

Here in HI, I need all the cool air I can get :D

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm mainly concerned with concentrated AC operation behind the LCD screen rather than overall in-cabin temperatures. Again, this is in regards to the flip out screens that props itself right in front of the main AC vents on the gen1s.

I'm wondering how such a unit would hold up, say if I was on a long road trip under a summer sun and I have the AC on. Yes, the LCD is blocking the main vents, but I imagine it could still manage to cool the cabin. But again, how would the LCD hold up?

45 degrees would be pretty cold for AC...think about everything that ships over here from different areas of the world on boats and trucks, then sits in non-climate controlled warehouses for months, like most electronics...they're all subject to much more extreme temps than AC could ever dish out. Chances are pretty good that your LCD screen has already been climate tested plenty before you ever get it.

I say go for it!
