License Plate bulbs ?

Silly question here..... both of my license plate lamps are not working on my 04 Trac. Is there a way to take the bulb out of the back or is it all one piece ? From years of being in the sun I am sure the plastic will break if I try to pull on them too much. Does anyone have any sugestions ? The cops down here in Florida are looking for any excuse to give tickets and make money.

Yes, they pull out through the back. I can't remember if you have to twist it or not.

Owners manual:

Remove the bulb socket from the lamp assembly by turning it counterclockwise and pulling the bulb straight out.
