Hello guys and gals-

I am getting ready to enter a new apartment and I need internet. I dont want dial up, but I dont want to pay for a phone line that I wont ever use either just to have the DSL. I need some suggestions on how to go about this. I am almost sure I will have to get a phone line, but can I have just a basic phone, no long distance, no caller id, just a good ol phone? If you have any ideas let me know.

In my area you can get a simple basic phone line, no frills. For me, it was $8.36 per month for that line.

However, I am betting you will have cable TV. If so, I strongly suggest going with a cable modem. You can have the bill incorporated with your cable bill. It will be slightly discounted for you to do it that way.

I have something like 200 channels and ultra high speed Internet for $79.00 a month total.

I had an extra phone line for the computer before I switched to a cable modem. It was just a basic line with no frills (I think I was paying something like an extra $11 a month for it.) I do love the speed with the cable although it's the only high speed kind of connection i've tried. My cable bill has become my largest utility bill, just beating out electic.

I've got a Comcast Cable Modem hooked to a wireless router. My wife's PC laptop and my Mac laptop both work flawlessly on it from anywhere in my house.

Many phone companies do provide 'naked DSL' ( DSL service without a regular phone line). AT&T does offer that service. I wanted to keep my landline, and I pay $29.99/month for 6mbps DSL service from AT&T.

Cox Cable is our local cable company, but their service was too expensive and unreliable in my neighborhood.
